In recent years the CL KO stage has thrown up some great games which is in stark contrast to the mundane fair it serves up in the Autumn.

If anything, it will give further encouragement to those who want to make the CL into Elite clubs membership only affair....although the fact that Ajax are still involved helps the case of the provincials

Two really interesting ties.

Liverpool lost all 3 away games in the CL group but have only lost 1 away game in the League, to Man City.

However they won both away games in the KO stages and scored 7 goals at Bayern Munich and Porto.

The last time Barca lost at home in the CL was May 2013 and are unbeaten in 30 odd.

0-1 Ajax.

‘Spurs eventually gained a bit of possession and exerted pressure but not enough to trouble Ajax defence. No real save required by the ‘keeper.

All is not lost. Son could score a couple in the next leg but they might need three.

What a result if Ajax who started the tournament in the qualifiers as 250/1 outsiders were to actually win this. I hope they do but think the winner is more likely to come from the Liverpool/Barca semi.

Barca just pumped Pool 3-0, yet strangely Pool we’re probably marginally the better team.

The difference ?  No prizes for guessing. Messi with a worldy free kick to get the 3rd.

Salah hit the post when easier to score which may have changed things.

Highly unlikely Liverpool will come back from that.  Messi is so good it has become boring to watch him...there's an inevitability about him tearing teams apart.

Hopefully Ajax can sort Barcelona out in the final.

Great game, Liverpool did have chances, the keeper had 3 or 4 great saves and Salah hits the post. Yet Barca should have had two more in stoppage time, how did Dembele miss that!

The free kick was sublime.

Its one from 3 teams now which is good. Barca - I who could grudge Messi another CL title after Ronaldo winning 4 of the last 5. Ajax - would be a wonder story to see a former giant come back and win it from nowhere. Spurs - What a job that would be.

Goalkeepers losing it in finals or star strikers hitting the post when easier to score, there is something predictable about Liverpool stalling at this time of year.

Messi eventually took the tie away from Liverpool but the Scousers have themselves to blame for not having one or two away goals.

The history of Barcelona in the early 20th century will have two very different chapters, the Glory Years of Messi and the Relative Famine Post Messi.

All that said, it would be good to see Liverpool get an early goal and some momentum in the second leg and breath some life into the tie.
