Those long summer nights are great but Quality (strong sunlight) over Quantity (daylight/occasional sunshine) The bigger downside is that the Scottish winter sees very long nights on top of a lack of sunshine. In the south of Europe we have daylight until 6pm+ on December 21st. I don’t envy you the Dutch winters. Years ago I used to spend 10 days every month between The Hague, Beverwijk and Assen and found the winters miserable. That cold misty murk that settles for weeks on end over the coastal marshland we now call Holland is so depressing.

I have had temperatures of -25 degrees but not in the last 30 years. Holland is happy in the winter when people can ice-skate. Black ice is sometimes a big problem on the roads if it rains onto frozen roads it becomes treacherous. My wife tells me that years ago they used to ice-skate to school over the roads. I have never witnessed that although I have had some cagey moments with ice on the road but the Dutch are excellent at salting the roads in the night so the morning traffic normally runs okay.
