Do we have a creative midfielder? We definitely need one.

Along with a striker, a creative midfielder is our biggest requirement.

Windass (tin hat time) can actually play the 10 role fairly well, particularly as he has that initial burst of pace to get away from a player.  Needs more consistency and, if we are being honest, we need better than him, but with him to offer competition for that position.  He is wasted out wide.

TRO suggesting that we will be signing Jon Flanagan on a permanent deal

Flanagan has earned numerous plaudits for his style of play since his breakthrough into the Liverpool first team in November 2013; most notably, the World Cup-winning former Brazil captain and full back Cafu heralded Flanagan as his "successor", applauding his "speed, strength and determination" and stating he "has everything required to be one of the best full-backs in the world".[37][38][39] This has led to fans dubbing Flanagan as  "the Scouse Cafu".

Is he Left or Right Back?  He looked good at Liverpool but has had some off the field problems.

He's right footed and listed as a right back but can and often has played on the left at Liverpool so presumably versatile. As for off field problems.

Flanagan was arrested after admitting assaulting his girlfriend, Rachael Wall, in Liverpool City Centre on 22 December 2017. After pleading guilty, in January 2018 he was sentenced to 40 hours of unpaid work and a 12-month community order.

Hopefully a one off moment of madness and I know of no other instance of him getting into trouble but it was this incident that put him entirely out of the picture at Liverpool. So if he signs who makes way? DJ or Tav? At this time i'm not even putting Wallace in the equation.

I'd agree that's what we want (and Celtic/Rodgers have managed this pretty well) but it arguably requires a budget we don't have.  As such, so-called squad players are still perhaps a necessary evil.

Generally, no matter what we do, the management of the team has to be better to rotate people in and out much more often than we did last season.

Yes, there is a limited amount you can do with a relatively limited budget compared to generally recognied objectives.

Trying to squeeze as much quality as possible out of a limited budget has seen us gambling (and losing) on undoubtely (once) quality players, eg. Barton, Kranjcar, Rossiter and Pena. All had different baggage of some kind and it came home to roost for them all.

There has to be a different approach.

Business wise to raise funds for other transfers, it might be............

Tav out for 3M

Flanagan in (no fee/relatively big wage)

Losing Tav would be a blow, no idea about Flanagan.

Rangers will land a gem if they see off interest from Celtic to land Jon Flanagan.

The Ibrox giants are said to be on the verge of making the defender, 25, their seventh summer signing as Steven Gerrard once again makes full use of his Liverpool connections.

Glasgow Evening Times report Anfield academy product Flanagan is “closing in” on a move north of the border after the Merseysiders announced on their official website on 8 June that he would leave when his contract expired at the end of this month.

It is a blow to Celtic, who have also been credited with interest in a player known well to their manager Brendan Rodgers and were reported by the Sunday Post earlier this month to be ready to table an offer for him.

The Scottish champions made Odsonne Edouard their record signing last week but have been eclipsed in terms of transfer activity by their bitter rivals on the other side of Glasgow.

A whirlwind of arrivals has demonstrated the clear desire to narrow the gap on Rodgers’ side, who have majisterially swatted all domestic challenges aside in the last two years.

In Flanagan, Rangers would be getting a proven Premier League player who has suffered the slings and arrows of life at a Premier League giant.

The full-back made his name with a series of outstanding performances in the 2013-14 season in which Liverpool so nearly won the title under Rodgers but a series of shattering knee injuries derailed his career.

Flanagan has also endured off-pitch issues which have blackened his name and cast a shadow over his final months at Anfield.

Gerrard is seemingly keen to offer the carrot for his former team-mate to resurrect his career in an arena he will recognise for its traditions and huge passion.

Flanagan has not been able to recapture the heights of four years ago – not yet, at least – but he has pedigree and a serious work ethic.

Assuming his injury issues are behind him, Rangers could be about to seal their best deal yet for a player who won’t require a transfer fee.
