Rumour of the day.

RANGERS SET TO SWOOP FOR MAGNIFICENT MIDFIELD MAESTRO

Now that he has officially started work, Rangers fans can begin to dream about a return to the glory days under Steven Gerrard, though the new man in charge at Ibrox will have to bring in several quality players if his side are to challenge Celtic straight away.

Scottish football may not be at its strongest right now, but the opportunity to represent a huge club under a manager whose name is known across the globe as a result of his playing exploits will certainly be an attractive proposition for many.

Throw in boyhood support of the Gers, as well as the fact that your contract at a team freshly relegated from the Premier League is set to expire at the end of the month, and it is easy to see why James Morrison is being linked with a move north of the border.

A veteran of over 300 Premier League games, perhaps West Brom would not have endured such a terrible campaign had the 32-year-old not suffered an Achilles injury that restricted him to just four top-flight appearances in 2017/18:

This would  certainly seem to be the case based upon the evidence of the previous season, with the Baggies scoring an extra 0.5 goals per match and collecting an additional 0.6 points per game when Morrison featured in 2016/17.

A Europa League finalist during his time at Middlesbrough, the Scotland international is a cultured midfield player capable of making well-timed runs into the opposition box, as demonstrated by his direct involvement in 68 Premier League goals during his career.

These numbers are, of course, nowhere near as impressive as those put up by Gerrard in the English top-flight, but working with someone who has been such a star could only help to improve the 32-year-old’s understanding of his position.

DOUBLE DEAL

Rangers on brink of £3.5m Connor Goldson transfer with Ovie Ejaria’s loan move expected to be clinched on Wednesday

Goldson will now discuss personal terms with Gers as Ejaria gets set to become Steven Gerrard's fourth summer signing.

RANGERS are on the brink of tying up a deal to land Connor Goldson.

SunSport can reveal Gers have agreed a price in the region of £3.5million to land the Brighton stopper.

It’s also understood they hope to complete the loan signing of Liverpool attacking midfielder Ovie Ejaria tomorrow.

New Ibrox gaffer Steven Gerrard has been keen to get new players in ahead of their return for pre-season training on June 15.

SunSport first told of his interest in Goldson, 25, on May 16 but it has taken time for both sides to hammer out a figure.

The Seagulls have stalled as they try to land Paddy McNair from Sunderland, while they could also owe Goldson’s former club Shrewsbury a percentage of any sale.

But it’s thought both clubs are now happy and Goldson’s arrival is now all but confirmed.

Gerrard has since spoken to Goldson to outline his plans for the future at Gers and the defender is ready to commit.

Goldson joined the Seagulls from the Shrews in 2015 and was a regular in their team when they were fighting to get up from the Championship into the Premier League.

His career was put on hold when he needed open-heart surgery back in February last year.

Goldson returned to make his Premier League debut in the 1-0 win over Watford last December.

But he struggled to nail down a regular spot and is surplus to requirements under Chris Hughton.

That alerted Gerrard and if things go to plan Goldson will become one of the first new faces to arrive at the Light Blues since Gerro was appointed to the Ibrox hotseat.

He's still just 25 which in terms of the current transfer market prices would appear to be acceptable value if he's as good as some appear to think he is. I'm presuming Mark Allen and Stevie G know what they're doing with our limited resources and especially so Stevie. His managerial credentials are on the line.

The team needs continuity and a core to build upon. This guy is young and everyone says he is pretty legit.

I don't know about this Morrison dude. Thirty-two and coming off an Achilles injury seems pretty dicey to me. This guy blows another tire and its curtains. Especially for a club with little wiggle room in funds seems like a big gamble. BTW...everybody keeps talking about a tight budget. What kind of number are we lookin at?

The numbers are another unknown.

£3.5M for a guy who’s not played all that much in the last 2 years, seems excessive.

I'd be very pleased to get him for that. He's in demand. Seems we're trying to get this tied up early before anyone else moves for him.

Had a pint with an old school friend who's a Brighton season ticket holder and he said "you can't have him. we need to keep him".

Liam Kelly could quit Rangers and join Livingston on a two-year deal.

The goalkeeper spent a season on loan at the Tony Macaroni Arena when they won the League One title and was third choice keeper at Ibrox last season.

And now the Express say the 22-year-old will sign a two-year deal with Livingston as competition for veteran Neil Alexander.

Kelly had signed a two-year contract extension with Rangers last summer but with Allan McGregor, Wes Foderingham and Jak Alnwick all ahead of him at the club, it looks like he could move on.
