RANGERS fans group Union Bears have accused Hampden chiefs of stopping them unveiling a display before Sunday’s Scottish Cup semi-final against Celtic.

The Gers ‘ultras’ hit out at the decision on their Facebook page and urged Light Blues supporters to take flags and banners to the match.

But the SFA have now made it clear why the decision was made.

A Scottish FA spokesman said: “At a preliminary operations meeting for the William Hill Scottish Cup semi-finals, it was mutually agreed by all parties that logistically it would not have been feasible to allow supporters to set up a display for Sunday’s match so soon after the conclusion of Saturday’s semi-final.

“When we were alerted to the request from a Rangers supporters’ group just this week, the matter was again discussed with all parties, who again were in consensus that the original decision was the sensible one given the practicalities involved.

“The Scottish FA is always keen to engage with supporters to ensure our showpiece matches at the national stadium have the best possible atmosphere and we look forward to what promises to be an enjoyable weekend of football.”

The Union Bears post read: “Ahead of Sunday’s semi-final, the Union Bears had been planning a large display that we had hoped would spur the team onto victory.

“After weeks of preparation and thousands of pounds spent, the head of security at Hampden Park has decided that he won’t be allowing us to have a display and has yet to provide a valid reason why he has come to this decision.

“In an effort to get behind the team and bring as much colour as possible to the Rangers end, the group would like to ask all supporters and RSCs to bring flags and banners to the game.

“Despite the efforts of Hampden security, we are positive the full Rangers support can get together and turn Hampden into a sea of red, white and blue as the teams emerge from the tunnel.

“Union Bears – no surrender.”

People have to let the guys preparing the display in, which have to be checked and supervised. Pending on the size of the display and the people needed, it may well be deemed unsafe or that the security folk et al were not able to provide extra / early supervision and checks. From the outside, such stuff looks utterly simple and easy. It ain't. Maybe the UB folk should have asked the Hampden chaps much earlier?

I guess the UB treasurer will have some questions to answer as to why thousands of pounds have been wasted.

Why on earth was money spent before approval was received?

With anti-Rangers sentiment as rife as it is in Scotland why would  UB expect Hampden / SFA authorities be any different?

UB have arranged displays at Hampden on Sunday semis previously, so the SFA story doesn't add up.

Just make sure you take a Union Flag.  Tims hate it.

Do keep in mind that we don't know all the facts.

Given the UB's recent "fuck you" to authority with their unauthorised march, and leaflets using the F word and images of violence, is it really any surprise when the authorities decide not to risk helping them when they have no idea what the outcome will be?

The UBs should remember that there are consequences to their actions.

Fair comment.
