Ray Wilkins Dies Aged 61

Recommended Posts

Awful news.  Thoughts are with the Wilkins family.

He he was just before my time as I started going in 1990 just after he left but by all accounts he was a classy player for us, as well as being a genuinely nice man.

Unfortunately Ray played for Rangers at a time where i lived abroad and with no computers then as now I was restricted to trying to get snippets of information from dodgy transistor radio's where the signal would come and go. Funny enough I was in Glasgow for that famous 5-1 victory with a group of Dutch friends to play 5 a side football. Not being able to get tickets for the big game I took them to the piggery to watch the reserves playing. Even there, there was over 5000 supporters. As the Reserve game started earlier we were getting news on the bus home from a guy with a tranny. I remember the guy telling us Wilkins has just scored a screamer. I will always remember that for the rest of my life. He was ages with me so he was far too young. Rest in piece Ray. Welterusten

My dad had a friend who was doing some business work for Ray during his time at Ibrox and I happened to say that Ray was one of the very few English players I'd pay money to see.

A couple of weeks later I got told to dig out my suit, dress up and head for a meal in Glasgow city centre where he was our guest. He was truly the most gentle, unashaming, calm and interesting players I've ever had the pleasure of being in the company of.

A few months later I came across him during a stadium tour and he made sure he spent time standing by my mates for all their photos and autographs.

The world has lost a gentleman.

By the way, he never liked being called Butch. Disappointed that Rangers reaction was not reported on the BBC stream when the news broke. It was quite a coup for us when we got him. My best memory was his goal in the 5-1, yet they kept showing his Man U goal with his left foot.

There is a post on Twitter from Nigel Quashie which speaks volumes about Wilkins.  If I knew how to post it I would - a terrific read and a very small insight into the type of human Ray Wilkins was - basically saying that Wilkins was giving him his debut and only informed him just before the game - Quashie was surprised and had no money to even tell his mother he was starting.  Unbeknown to Quashie, earlier in the week Wilkins had bought a mobile phone and given it to Quashie's Mum - Wilkins handed Quashie a phone and told him to phone this number - Quashie didn't recognize the number and the person on the other end of the call was obviously his Mum - Quashie was grateful to Wilkins for going to such lengths.  Again unbeknown to Quashie..... Wilkins had also organized for the Club to buy a train ticket for his Mum to come to the game where he made his debut.

All in all, a very, very nice touch.  And just a small indication of the genuinely kind person that Ray Wilkins was.

As many have said, the world has lost a gentleman.
