They used to take out your whole Cartilage in the old days before keyhole surgery but now they can normally clean it up through keyhole surgery. I guess there are more serious injuries though that need more drastic measures . It looked actually like his cartilage had popped out to me.

The report states that 

 

- he suffered cartliage damage

- he has had surgery last week

- (implies) the first disgnosis didn't or didn't fully grasp the extent of the injury. That it is worse than first thought (or has gotten worse since)

 

Basically, we don't really know the detail of what is going on with his knee.

However, between several different events of recent months, the medical department isn't coming accross as being on top of their game.
