Thanks for posting that Ian, and very interesting to hear him speak about Walter Smith in particular. He seemed to be serious when he said they'd spend 5 minutes at most on shape and tactics. Walter just told them "to go and play and win the game". That's astonishing, but it shows what sort of football education Mccoist had. Perhaps then unsurprising that Ally was not so great in modern day management.

That's staggering to me. That was outdated when Walter was doing it, so it's completely out of the question now, for me.

I think that can be true, but it depends at what level you want the team to perform. At senior level, although not as prevalent in Scottish football, there needs to much more emphasis on tactics. If we don't get it right, we get punished in Europe, and that's where we need to make it happen. Guardiola doesn't just put his team out on the pitch. They analyse every detail to make small improvements to the chance that his team will win the game. I do agree that 90% at least is down to the players, but that 10% can be the difference between winning and losing. It's worth the effort.

Would kind of explain Euro failures in the 90s aswell. We had the best players in the league domestically and swept up trophies yet could never show up in the CL under WS in the 90s. If he wasnt coaching opposition then it says a lot.
