Commons said: “I don’t think they can afford him.”

 

Ayr United boss and ex-Rangers midfielder Ian McCall said he was certain McInnes – and not O’Neill – was the club’s top target.

 

McCall said: “I think he’s nailed on.“I understand the board taking their time because it’s really important – Celtic have won six titles in a row.”

Commons added: “It’s down to resources.“And I don’t think the resources or money are there to offer a top-class manager the money they’d get elsewhere.”

 

Last week the Light Blues warned anxious fans they were no closer to finding Caixinha’s successor.

 

But it’s believed Gers are prepared to meet the Dons’ compensation demands after McInnes, 46, penned a new three-year deal in the summer.
