Teams that missed out on the 2018 World Cup

Recommended Posts

Given the surprise at Italy missing the World Cup Finals for the 1st time in 60 years I had a look at teams that have missed the qualifying, some interesting ones as follows :

Italy (obviously)

Netherlands (sorry pete :D)

USA (surprising given their path is usually fairly comfortable)

Chile (that one surprises me given they won the Copa America the last two years)

Ivory Coast

Ghana

Some big, big names in there.

Big names, but technically -- in the case of Italy and Netherlands in particular -- they've been overtaken by more progressive sides. Sweden -- although that second game was a back-to-the-walls game -- are a really good side -- it shows you don't need a superstar like Ibrahimovic to succeed.

Judging from that clip they didn't expect to make it, what might we see if Scotland were ever to make it again. As for Italy they appear to be a side in need of rebuilding. Four of their players retired from international immediately after that game.

Like most tournaments where you don't have any skin in the game, the World Cup will likely be another endurance race of tedium interspersed with the occasional flash of entertainment. The last few World Cups have been as entertaining as the average Champions League.
