Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos throws down gauntlet to fellow new boy Eduardo Herrera: 'I'm not here to play second fiddle'

Morelos is desperate to make his debut in Thursday's Europa League qualifier against Progres Niederkorn but knows he is in for a tough battle with Herrera for a starting spot.

New Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos admits he can't wait to battle it out with fellow new boy Eduardo Herrera for a starting spot. And he's desperate to make a huge impression in his debut tomorrow night.

Rangers snapped up the Colombian hitman on a three year deal from Finnish outfit HJK Helsinki earlier this month. And the 20-year-old has revealed he's pleased at how easily he's settled down in Scotland at his new club.

Morelos said: "All my team mates at Rangers have received me very well since I came to Scotland. "I'm happy - the fans are incredible. I have had so many messages of support. Now I want to play on Thursday to show what I can do."I don't know all my teammates yet, but I know Eduardo Herrera. He has already played for Mexico and has had a good career and he scores goals.

"We play in the same position so it will be an interesting duel. It's going to be a bit difficult to get a place in the team, but not impossible, I'm training as hard as I can to show I deserve to play.

"The most difficult thing I've found since I came to Scotland has been the pitches. In Finland, they play and train on artificial pitches, but in Scotland everything is done on grass."I feel I am adapting really well and I am learning all the time with the Rangers coaches.

"Finnish football was great for me and I scored a lot of goals. But Scottish football is a higher standard with better players and it is more competitive. It's going to be a real challenge for me.

"I'm going to be playing in front of 50,000 fans - that's obviously very different to Finland. I know there will be big pressure here and I will have to get used to that too.

"But I am confident in my own ability. It's a massive step for my career.

"The ultimate aim for me is to get noticed by Colombia. My ambition is to play for my country and Rangers can help me do that."

But there's something that has puzzled the new striker.

He said: "The people in Scotland are very cool. They have treated me very well."But the strange thing is that men here wear skirts, I do not think I will wear that even though it's a tradition here!"
