Statement from Linfield Football Club

I can perfectly understand their feelings about this blatant fabrication. Didn't we feel the same when the fantasy of Rangers fans attacking police trying to get into stop the hubz rampage at the SC final was printed?

Celtic supporters groups have called on the Hoops board to reverse their decision not to accept tickets for the potential Champions League qualifier against Linfield in Belfast.

Celtic confirmed last week they would not be taking any briefs for the clash, which will go ahead should Linfield beat San Marino minnows La Fiorita in the first round.

The Hoops hierarchy fear major security issues for the game at Windsor Park at the height of marching season despite a switch to Friday, July 14 with a 5pm kick-off.

Now the Celtic Trust and Green Brigade have issued a statement voicing their disappointment at the decision.

And they have called for Celtic to reconsider their stance - or for Linfield to sell tickets directly to Hoops supporters.

Their statement said: “The statement noted ‘safety concerns’ but it is our understanding that the PSNI does not object to Celtic fans travelling and, indeed, Linfield has publicly encouraged the board to accept our allocation and stated they are ‘more than happy’ for Celtic fans to attend the match.

“We believe that the board is more concerned with protecting the brand than the welfare of the fans or the success of our team.

“It is a very sad and strange turn of events when the custodians of our own club do not want the world famous Celtic support backing the team in a ‘crucial’ away match yet the home club welcomes us with open arms.

“We call on the board to reconsider their decision, and should they fail to do so, for Linfield to sell tickets directly to Celtic supporters."

Telling their fans that there will be no briefs available for the potential clash, a Celtic statement released on Friday read: "The safety and security of all Celtic supporters travelling and attending matches is of paramount importance to the club.

"Should La Fiorita of San Marino qualify for the next round, the first leg match would take place on 11 or 12 July.

"Regardless of opposition, Celtic’s home leg of this qualifying round will take place at Celtic Park on Wednesday, July 19, 2017, and entry to this first home European qualifier will once again be included as part of the 2017/18 Season Ticket.

"If the tie against Linfield proceeds, it will not affect the friendly match between Celtic and Lyon at Celtic Park on 15 July – more information on this match will follow as soon as possible."
