Pena's Ibrox goal

Carlos Pena’s agent claims Mexican midfielder will use Rangers as a springboard to play in the English Premier League

The 27-year-old's agent, Salvador Necochea, has made it clear the midfielder's stay in Glasgow could be temporary

CARLOS PENA will use Rangers as a springboard to play in the English Premier League, according to his agent.

And Ibrox boss Pedro Caixinha told the Mexican midfielder he wanted to sign him just days after taking charge in Glasgow earlier this year.

The midfielder has been one of eight summer arrivals at Ibrox, alongside Bruno Alves, Fabio Cardoso, Dalcio, Daniel Candeias, Ryan Jack, Eduardo Herrera and Alfredo Morelos.

But Pena’s agent, Salvador Necochea, has made it clear the 27-year-old’s stay in Glasgow could be temporary as he reckons he can win a move to the riches of England’s top flight.

He said: “The objective is for Carlos to return to the level he was at a couple of years ago if he focuses 100 per cent on football and works hard.“If he manages to do that, within no more than a couple of years he should be able to move to an English Premier League team, which is our aim.“If he gets to the level we all know he can reach, he can do it.”

And Necochea revealed Caixinha made it obvious from his very early days at Ibrox, he intended to build his team around Pena.

He said: “Shortly after Pedro Caixinha arrived at Rangers, he let us know his interest in modifying the style of play of the team.“And he made it clear that fundamental to his plans were to sign a player with the characteristics of Carlos.“We spoke for three months and fortunately, we reached agreement with the help of Chivas and Rangers.

“Caixinha wants a physical, box-to-box player who can make an impact at both ends of the park.“Carlos has the power and the strength to be that player and he can also provide goals for the team.“He wants Carlos to be a key player in the team and he will be.”

In days of old we would have said it doesnt get any bigger than us and the player is a fool for having ambition to play in england over us. Nowadays however the football world has changed, and we (and the bheasts) actually use this as a selling point to players we want to sign, with a proven list of players who have been successful using us as a vehicle to get noticed by the big money down south.

I'm glad he is honest enough up front, instead of badge-kissing fools who swear allegiance then disappear at the first sign of a pay rise elsewhere.

If he gets his way, it will be because he has been putting in good performances for us, and we will make a profit on him, so its all good.

Absolutely no problem with that....

If the guy wants to win a move down south....he has to prove himself here first - and that will be to our benefit.

I have a problem he says it before he has kicked a ball.

I get where you're coming from but at the same time he's being entirely honest about it and let's face it, anyone with any quality will have the same thing in mind. I expect that even we who grew up supporting the club would have the same thing in mind.

But we have him under contract and to get there he will have to consistently turn in some sterling performances then a couple of years down the line we can cash in and start the same process with someone else.

Someone else who has seen others before him get Euro football at Rangers and be showcased in the promised land about close as you can get to it without actually being in it.

Right now it's simply the way it is and will remain that way for the foreseeable future.
