Scotland fan jailed after shouting racist anti-English abuse at TV during Auld Enemy clash

Michael Beattie's partner left the house because he became even more agitated when England scored.

A football fan was so excited by the recent Scotland-England match that he was shouting anti-English abuse in his own home hours before kick-off.

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court last week Michael Beattie, 45, of Carron Place, Irvine, was jailed for a total of 10 months after he pleaded guilty to charges of racially aggravated threatening behaviour and assaulting his partner.

The court heard that at 3pm on Saturday, June 10, Beattie was drinking and preparing to watch the game.Standing at the fireplace, he shouted “English b******s” and “scum”.

He went on to seize his partner by the throat, but let go when she said: “Don’t do that”.

Beattie then grabbed the woman by the upper arms.

The fiscal depute said: “She said not to do that as she bruises easily and the accused let go at that point.”As the match started Beattie was standing in front of the television, swearing and shouting anti-English remarks.

His partner left the house because he became even more agitated when England scored. She returned half an hour later with a friend and the rest of the night passed without incident.

There was more trouble the following day.

The woman received a phone call from her daughter, asking her to come over.“You’re not going down there,” said Beattie.

He smashed a glass off the wall and made threats while holding the broken glass. His partner called the police, who arrived around 9.40pm to find Beattie with a cut to his hand.He said: “I want to be with Michael.”

The court heard that this was a reference to Beattie’s son, who was in prison.

Graeme Cunningham, defending, said: “If he goes to the same prison he will be with him.”

The solicitor said that Beattie had apologised to his partner when the police arrived.“He has asked me to reiterate that,” said Mr Cunningham.

Sheriff Alistair Watson sentenced Beattie to seven months in prison and ordered him to serve three months of a previous sentence from which he had been released early on licence.
