Aberdeen holding out for £1million payout before they allow Derek McInnes to join Sunderland

Black Cats chief executive Martin Bain is keen to land the 45-year-old and has spent the morning locked in talks with Pittodrie chairman Stewart Milne.

Aberdeen are holding out for a £1million payout before they allow Derek McInnes to become the next manager of Sunderland.

Record Sport understands Pittodrie chairman Stewart Milne has spent the morning locked in talks with Black Cats chief executive Martin Bain as the pair attempt to thrash out a compensation package for McInnes and his right hand man Tony Docherty.

And although no deal has been struck it is anticipated an agreement will be reached during further discussions this afternoon - and that McInnes will then be allowed to travel south to talk personal terms with Bain.

Former Rangers supremo Bain marked the name of the Aberdeen boss at the top of Sunderland's shortlist within 24 hours of Davie Moyes quitting the post following relegation form the top flight.

Although others such as Stadium of Light favourite Kevin Phillips have been in the running, it's understood Bain has been keen on luring McInnes over the border ever since seeking the advice of former Ibrox boss Walter Smith.

But Bain needed the approval of the club's owners before he was in a position to launch a move for the Dons boss who has been on holiday in the USA since losing the Scottish Cup Final to Celtic at the end of last month.

It definitely looks as if he will be off to Sunderland which will throw the sheep into even more disarray. Never mind. Can always try to land another Caley Thistle player to offset the disruption. Hell might get their whole team for that million.

£1,000,000 will just be petty cash to Sunderland with the amount of money splashing about down there.

Which is exactly why I think he will be off if that's all there is left to stop it.

The Sunderland fans on the whole seem happy with the prospect. They see him as a young manager on an upward trajectory with the one bad season he had at Bristol dismissed as not his fault. Seems that after a season at Bristol in which he had just saved them from what looked like certain relegation the board then sold his best players out from under him in the close season.

Then fired him when the inevitable bad results began to stack up.

Especially getting 30 million for their keeper as I just posted on the other thread.

McInnes was always going to leave, he has to. He has taken Aberdeen as far as he could and with their squad being sold he would have a huge job rebuilding that.

Good luck to him if he goes. Very difficult job as they have been through a lot of managers in recent years.
