CUTTING THEIR LOSSES Norwich set to release Steven Naismith on a FREE TRANSFER… just 16 months after shelling out £8.5million for the striker from Everton

The Canaries have culled most of the 'big names' left in their squad, and £50,000-a-week man Naismith could be next

STEVEN NAISMITH could be handed a free transfer by Norwich — just 16 months after joining from Everton for £8.5million.

Cash-strapped Norwich, who failed to reach the Championship play-offs, yesterday showed the door to John Ruddy, Sebastien Bassong, Steven Whittaker, Ryan Bennett, Youssouf Mulumbu, Michael Turner and Kyle Lafferty.

The Canaries are planning further cuts and Scottish international Naismith — who earns £50,000 a week — could be released to save the club £5m in wages over the remaining two years of his contract.

Naismith, 30, did not have a relegation clause in his contract when the club dropped out of the Premier League last term.

Norwich will have just one more season of parachute payments — worth £30m — and need to slash their wage bill.Having been relegated from the top flight last term, is was expected that the Canaries would bounce straight back.

But with one of the best squads on paper in the league, they instead are in eighth, six points off the playoffs with one game to go, destined for another year in the second tier.

Many fans wanted to see experienced, highly-paid stars leave, and they got their wish with the departure of long-serving Ruddy and former Spurs and Newcastle man Bassong.

But City have extended the contracts of keeper Declan Rudd and defender Harry Toffolo for a further year, with both on loan this year at Charlton and Scunthorpe respectively.
