Alex Rae convinced Pedro Caixinha can bring glory days back to Ibrox

The former St Mirren manager reckons the Portuguese boss is desperate to make the most of his opportunity in Glasgow.

Alex Rae reckons Pedro Caixinha is the right man for Rangers after being blown away by the Ibrox boss when he interviewed for a role on his coaching staff.

The former St Mirren manager was at the club’s Auchenhowie HQ on Thursday and had a 75 minute one-to-one interview with the Portuguese boss.

Record Sport exclusively revealed Rae interviewed for the role as No 3 with Caixinha searching a coach with 'local' knowledge of the club.

Former Rangers favourites Barry Ferguson, John Brown and Peter Lovenkrands have also spoken to the Ibrox boss about joining his staff.

But Rae says even if he's unsuccessful he has no doubt about the 46-year-old after spending time with him.

He told Radio Clyde: "He has an idea on how to play the game. Very modern.“He was really impressive, dominant in terms of what he wanted to put across, his ideas and how he sees the job going forward.“I was really impressed with him.“Regardless if it’s myself or someone else, I think it’s important they are trying to get someone Rangers connected to the club.“I think it’s a wise move on his part. ”

Having spent some time in his company he looked as if he was really up for it.

Rae - who was at Ibrox as a player between 2004 and 2006 - reckons Caixinha will do all he can to close the gap on Celtic in the coming years.

He added: “He’s obviously left a job in Qatar for substantial money to come to“He obviously sees it as an unbelievable opportunity and I think it’s fair too say he’s going to embrace this and go full guns to try and claw the back the gap on Celtic.”

My own view is that Caixinha might see us as a stepping stone to the EPL.

I don't have a problem with that because he'll need to be successful with us first to do that.

But so did MW and you could tell he wanted out this season as it was too tough for hi. But he wasnt ever going to get a job in the Premier straight away.

For Pedro - what will success be though? A title challenge? Some would see that he makes Rangers progress.

Like you say - no issue with it long term if it means he has 55 to his name and we hear the Cl theme at Ibrox again.
