Mark Warburton a shock contender for Arsenal academy director job

Recommended Posts

The ex-Ibrox boss is popular with the Premier League giant's hierarchy and could replace the highly-rated Andries Jonker who departed for Wolfsburg.

Former Rangers boss Mark Warburton could be a surprise contender to replace Arsenal’s academy director Andries Jonker who quit yesterday to take charge of Wolfsburg.

The ex-Ibrox boss could be an interesting choice for the Gunners. Sources at the club say he is highly thought of following his stint as a youth coach at Watford before moving into management.

If he is prepared to leave first-team football to go back to coaching youths then he has all the experience required to make him an ideal fit for Arsenal who spend fortunes on their youth development programme.

Warburton departed Ibrox earlier this month after a disappointing season and it is not known if he would be looking for a return as a first-team coach or would be tempted by a role at the Premier League giants.

One stumbling block over any potential deal is the former Brentford boss's ongoing dispute with the Ibrox club over the terms of his dismissal.

Warburton, assistant boss David Weir and head of recruitment Frank McParland departed after allegedly tendering their resignations in the week leading up to their Scottish Cup clash with Morton.

The 54-year-old - who started his coaching career with Watford - won the Scottish Championship with the Ibrox side last season as well as reaching the Scottish Cup Final where Hibs defeated them 3-2.

Warburton's Rangers side then struggled in the Scottish Premiership during this campaign with the fans eventually turning on him over his tactics before his departure from the club.

From what we heard Warburton doesn't like confrontation. Working with kids will probably suit him better. That way, when some young guy shows some promise he can be passed on to a real manager who understands tactics and everything else that goes with football.

No doubt he'd be a success at the job.

I won't say I wish him well though.
