Mark Warburton: Random nature of football has gone against Rangers

Recommended Posts

RANGERS manager Mark Warburton believes the random nature of football went against his side during their 1-1 draw with Ross County on Saturday.

The Light Blues came in for criticism from their own support after only managing to pick up a point against the Staggies and losing 4-1 to Hearts at Tynecastle three days earlier.

Warburton lamented the 'randomness' of a result that saw his side fall into third place, 27 points adrift of Ladbrokes Premiership leaders Celtic.

“I think randomness is a big thing," he told Rangers TV. "I learned a lot from our previous owner at Brentford. He’s a mathematician and we learned a lot from him in terms of how he looks at games. "The randomness; the ball goes to the back post,*Kenny*heads it to Jon Toral and it could go in. Joe Garner’s header pops off the goalkeeper, it could go in. Joe in the first-half at the far post is a stud away.

“There were so many random natures that didn’t go our way. Was their goal offside? I don’t know, it was tight. Not worth complaining about now.

"So these are the random natures you look at and you hope over the course of a season they even themselves out. “The key point as far as the fans are quite rightly concerned is that we dropped two points to Ross County.

"I quote the stats and, as always, you get misquoted. The fact is we had 15 corners, 26 shots, 18 on target and nine times out of ten we win that game of football.

“The fact is we have to be clinical in the final third, we need to trust our technique and take our chances. There were lots of good things but there is no denying the fact we dropped two points at home.”

Warburton insisted that his side are capable of showing their cutting edge *up front, despite scoring only 32 goals in 24 league games so far this season, and believes the work ethic of his players cannot be called into question. “It’s not that we can’t be clinical," he said.

"Last year we were scoring goals for fun. It’s the nature of the game, but I think the fact of the matter is we get into good areas and we need to take our rewards.

“The fans, at the end of the day, come to see goals and goals*change games. There is no denying the fact the for our dominance*in the game, we didn’t get the just rewards, so to speak.

“They want to see their team win. What I don’t think they can do is accuse the team of lacking effort and desire. Look at the stats again and they will tell you that our midfield three for example ran 12km each. These are high numbers in central midfield.

“The whole work ethic is there, with the full-backs the work ethic is there, they ran 11.4km, so the numbers are there. There was no lack of desire. The fans come and pay their money to see Rangers win. Rangers is a club used to winning."

Emerson Hyndman has made an immediate impression at Ibrox*with two goals in his first four games since arriving on loan from Bournemouth in January, but Warburton admitted he is yet to decide on the American's best position.

“I asked Emerson*to play a slightly deeper role," he explained.

"It is our job to find where he will be most effective. He is a very talented eight or ten. He can see a pass in very tight areas.

"Again, going back to the Hearts game when he was substituted, he played 90 minutes at Motherwell, another 90 at the weekend.

“He is a young boy, his body is still young. It’s important we look after him.

"I am pleased with the midfield. It’s great to have Andy Halliday on the bench. He’s such a determined player, a focussed player. It means so much for him to play for the club."

Rangers face Greenock Morton in the Scottish Cup fifth round on Sunday and the boss admitted he is under pressure to deliver wins for the Ibrox faithful.

He said: “Listen, you can read the papers, you can read the media. I flew home on Saturday after the game. Had some great chats with some of the Rangers fan who were tremendous, they had great assessments, they could see the bigger picture.

"You are always under pressure as the Rangers manager, as a Rangers player. If you draw a game of football it’s a disaster. If you lose it is a disaster. We have to recognise that. It comes with the territory, being at a club of this stature.

“But as I say, the thing that bothers me is we don’t appreciate the demands of the club, we don’t appreciate the backing we receive. We fully appreciate the demands associated*with Rangers.

“What we have to do is win games of football."

I'm sorry Mark but that just sounds like a random line of silly excuses. If your auntie had baws has always been there. It didn't stop us beating teams we should be beating or cause us to commit suicide against another lot we should be mauling.

"Mathematician " my erchie.

The most random factors in Scottish football are refereeing decisions, which often seem to occur without reason.

However, I do harbour a suspicion that, in many match situations, the decisions open to the referee -especially, eg, to award, or not to award, a penalty to, or against, fhilth fc- do not

have an equal probability of being chosen.

I heard this earlier and just "sighed"! Sounds like a man who is already counting the days. The random nature of football. I actually think that works if you are a mid table side with no real ambition. I noticed he quoted that they used this ethos at Brentford.

No Mark, we are not the most successful club in the world due to the "random nature" or "statistical" balance or unbalance. Neither is any of your position as manager of our club or our results. Nothing "random" about it. Seriously still struggling to believe he thinks so little of fans intelligence the we would swallow that?

So we beat Ross County 15 corners to 1; unfortunately you don't get points for corners.

"nine times out of ten we win that game of football. " but 3 times out of 3 we have failed to beat Ross County.

"The randomness; the ball goes to the back post,*Kenny*heads it to Jon Toral and it could go in. Joe Garner’s header pops off the goalkeeper, it could go in. Joe in the first-half at the far post is a stud away. " Bollocks. It's nothing whatsoever to do with random statistics; it's because they were not good enough to put the ball in the back of the net, simples.

" there is no denying the fact we dropped two points at home.” got that right (twice) Mark (once away as well).

His patter makes me cringe!!

There should be no randomness involved when we should take three off teams like this!! The fact that there is not enough of a gap between us and these teams allows "randomness" to play its part! Get better in all areas and your "randomness" is insignificant!! BH nails it above. NOT GOOD ENOUGH MARK!!!

And while you're at it Mark, let's sign Mo Farrah and stick him in the midfield. I'm sure he would outrun any other player in the country...

Take a step back, be objective, realistic, and think again. He is telling it as it is, not to make excuses. Whether we like it as it is or not.

The one thing that is true is that possession, corner and chances scores don't win you matches. Goals do. By all probability, we should have won far more matches this season than we did, same last season. But sometimes football kicks you in the proverbial balls. And it is rather clear - not least with Rangers fans - who is at fault here.

As I said, take a step back and think again.

Find a goalscorer, provide him with chances, Mark, and, suddenly, the random nature of events

will not conspire against you.

Of course, there will continue to be random events in midfield, and in defence, but a solid centre back, or two,

and a proper defensive midfielder, and you will be laughing in the face of probability, and randomness.
