SPFL club chiefs in London to bid for record new TV deal

Recommended Posts

I think at first glance it seems diligent to start early as it allows for less brinkmanship and the time to seek alternatives if the talks break down.

However, the timing is not great as although Rangers are back at the top, we're not properly established yet, and while a lot of people are revelling in the gap, it's a poor product to sell. We need an actual competition to get the broadcasters interested.

However, the strange thing is that even without it, the OF are filling all the stadiums and you'd think the demand for TV would be proportional, so I think the devaluing point is the demand in England to see the games.

In the end I always find it strange that the money has absolutely no relationship to viewing figures, otherwise we'd be getting about 2500 percent more.

They're certainly starting early aren't they ? the ink's barely dry on the current contract !!!

When those 10 chairmen voted Rangers out the SPL in 2012 did they even consider what the consequences might be ? We've got a TV deal worth a mere £12.6m per SEASON. Compare that to the EPL TV deal which is worth something like £10.8m per GAME.

There is absolutely no chance of a vastly improved TV deal. Why should TV companies all of a sudden starting chucking money at Scottish football now because Rangers are back. Scottish football dug its own grave in 2012 when 10 buffoons voted Rangers out the SPL. Commercial insanity or sporting integrity call it what you like. The impoverished game in Scotland is fecked big style

Whatever future contract those fools manage to negotiate, there's one thing for certain - it will be Rangers fans who will lose out most by having games moved to 10am on a Monday morning, 8.30pm on a Friday night or similar such nonsense. Let's be honest here, who gives a monkeys about a Motherwell v Dundee Utd match, apart from the couple of hundred who go to watch them at games ?

So once again, SPL fans with have to pay twice for Sky and BT for a limited number of games on at stupid times. Once again it will only really seem value for money for those that avidly watch English football or watch a ton of TV in any case.

I've got the BT and Sky apps on my phone but with a lack of recording facility, I'm never going to watch a Friday night game as I'm always socialising.

There must be decent market there per-capita, but the whole consumer model just kills it for Scotland and our clubs, and provides a really terrible service.

Ironically, wanting more money for our clubs would be normally a bit of a conflict of interest for fans - as you have to pay more, but we're a strange, special case where most of our money actually goes to the English clubs. It's no wonder our clubs get less money than in the likes of Denmark with a similar population but a much smaller proportion of avid football fans.

We really need to remove ourselves to a different (single) platform from English football - a bit like what Setanta originally was - ie if people want to watch English and Scottish football, it's better for our clubs if they pay seperately. There is still a case for an SPFL channel or two, but they don't have the expertise or the savings from being large scale. However, it must be getting cheaper and cheaper to do this, when you consider how much TV is now shot on an adapted digital SLR costing under 5 grand.

As for actual content that viewers want to really see, it seems strange that in some ways we had a better service in the 80s than we do now. We have access to more live games (especially in poor quality and unreliable streaming mode - compared to broadcast TV) but I think we miss the four games a week of 30 minute extended highlights and analysis on a Saturday night and Sunday afternoon, and put up instead with a few minutes from all games on a Monday onwards.

In the end, going back to multiple broadcasters that also show EP stuff, means that we're going to once again fleece the fans - who don't support an English team, for a very poor value product.

The reason we have to pay twice is because the EU interfered in the guise of "competition" and demanded the matches be split into various packages.

Scottish football has a shite deal because it tried to bite the hand that fed it.

It must be the snow here in Mallorca, cabin fever is stripping me of my memory.

I remember the SPFL had a TV Committee of two, Peter der Fuhrer and one of his handy puppets, Neil Doncaster. Five years past, both boarded a London bound flight, were spotted, and by time they were photographed walking through Arrivals, the new TV Committee had been formed. If all the other SPFL club Chairman are involved, then its a jolly.

Derek Johnstone: SPFL hold a trump card in TV talks now that Rangers are back in the Premiership

THE television companies had the SPFL exactly where they wanted them a couple of years ago when it came to how much money the league received from the respective deals.

Everyone knew that Celtic would be champions before a ball was kicked because they had the most money, the biggest squad and the best players.

The TV firms knew that there would be no competition and the contracts were obviously worth less with Rangers not being in the top flight.

Now, we have got the Old Firm games back and that is a card that the SPFL will have to play when they look to negotiate the next deals.

A delegation led by Ralph Topping and Neil Doncaster met with BT Sport in London on Thursday. It could result in Scottish football securing its biggest ever broadcast package.

The current deals were extended in September 2015 but there is no harm in sitting round the table with BT and Sky Sports and looking at what could be done next time and the SPFL have a stronger case for more cash this time around.

The derby is one of the most watched games of the season in Britain and you could have five or six matches between Rangers and Celtic now when you take into account the cup games.

I would hope that the SPFL can get more money out of these talks and that will obviously benefit every club in the country because there is a bigger pot to be shared around.

Sky and BT have had Scottish football on the cheap for the last few years but now we have got something to bargain with going into these talks.

The current contracts run until 2020 but hopefully when the next deals kick in the clubs can look forward to receiving more money from the deals.

It's biggest ever broadcast package ? Yes, but how long will the package last ?

My money is on, for less money per season. But lasting for 25 years or similar.

Those fools couldn't organise a blow job in a brothel.
