Pensioners and kids have embarrassed Hibs by racially abusing me claims Rudi Skacel

Skacel insists racists have embarrassed the "whole Hibs community"

The Raith Rovers star lifts the lid on the sickening flak he insists he receives from Leith supporters.

Rudi Skacel has claimed he was subject to sickening racist abuse at Easter Road last month that even involved pensioners and kids.

The former Hearts striker has hit out at Hibs fans who allegedly taunted him with shouts of “refugee” during a game for Raith Rovers on December 24.

Skacel, 37, incensed home fans when he was subbed in the second half of the game, which finished 1-1, and made a ‘5-1’ gesture as he walked off the pitch.

That is a reference to the drubbing he helped inflict on the Leith club in the 2012 Scottish Cup Final, but he says he was left sickened by the behaviour of Hibs fans.

The Czech star said: “I’m shocked that such a big deal was made about what I did, it’s just a number. No one cares how they treated me for 90 minutes out there. They called me a refugee and other names.

“I had small kids calling me names. It was embarrassing. They were with their parents and they were calling me names and they think it’s fine. The children follow what they hear next to them, what they hear from their parents.”

Asked if the kids had also taunted him with jibes of “refugee” he added: “Of course, even old ladies. Dressed up in ties and suits ... it’s embarrassing for the whole Hibs community.

“I waved to our supporters, I showed them 5-1 and I showed Hibs fans 5-1 also, that was it. They can’t change history. It’s not my problem they lost 5-1.

“Of course it is painful for them but it is just football, we are still human beings. If you go to rugby, it shows a different example of how people support their club but in soccer stadiums what happens sometimes is embarrassing. The abuse is always bad (at Easter Road).

“You should write about these things. How would you react if people called you a refugee? But I make a gesture and they react by criticising me and saying I should be banned from football. It is embarrassing for all of the Hibs community.

“I played for Hearts and we beat them on so many occasions and I scored a few goals against them, so I understand all this. But they should be more polite, it should be more about banter.

“We need derbies and big games because it is exciting for supporters and players but there needs to be a line, and I think in every game, they (Hibs fans) are crossing it. We are human beings. It doesn’t bother me too much, but it is a shame for football generally.”

Skacel did not make a complaint to police, although Hibs fans and even players have previous for making the racist “refugee” slur against him.

Derek Riordan apologised in 2005 after he was caught on video singing the derogatory song and Leigh Griffiths also pleaded guilty 18 months ago to a similar offence.

Skacel is set to quit Scottish football at the end of the season and move to the States with his girlfriend, but insists he isn’t being driven out by racism.

He also denied being subject to hassle on the streets and added: “No. Edinburgh is a big city but the bigger half is Hearts supporters.

“All the wee team, they just live on the other side. I’ve not had any major trouble - hopefully, touch wood. I’m so glad.

“Scottish football needs these big derbies between Celtic and Rangers and Hearts and Hibs. You play football for big occasions like that, but you have to be sensible.

“It can be a war on the pitch but there can also be fun and banter about what is happening on the pitch.”

Hibs declined to comment when asked about Skacel’s claims.

Hibernian have responded to accusations of race hate slurs, by saying the player at the centre of the row is welcome to make a complaint to the club.

Raith Rovers midfielder Rudi Skacel has been scathing in his criticism of the Easter Road fans after he was allegedly subjected to unsavoury shouts of “refugee” during a game at the stadium on 24 December. Speaking earlier this week, as he previewed Sunday’s Scottish Cup tie against former employers Hearts, he condemned the vitriol of “small kids”, “old ladies” and supporters “dressed up in ties and suits” as he lambasted the Leith club.

“I read the comments and took the opportunity to look at the official match documents of the SPFL, and speak to our safety officer,” said Hibernian chief executive Leeann Dempster, who admitted to being surprised by the allegations as observers sitting in the main stand that day have said they did not hear any such abuse. “It was confirmed that nothing was reported to us. I certainly wasn’t aware of anything on the day and did not hear anything.

“However, if Rudi feels like he would like to make a complaint to the club then he is free to do that. We take any unacceptable conduct very seriously, from any of our supporters. Equally, I would say that applies to players as well.”

That appears to be a thinly-veiled dig at Skacel, who antagonised Hibs with a 5-1 gesture when he was substituted by Raith.

That was a reference to the 2012 Scottish Cup final humiliation of the Leith side by their capital rivals, a match in which Skacel scored two of Hearts’ five goals. But, while the player refused the opportunity to explain those actions to the media immediately after the game, and his manager did not mention the racist abuse when questioned about his player’s behaviour, Skacel has claimed that the gesture was a response to slurs which have dogged him for years.

Former Hibs players Derek Riordan and Leigh Griffiths have both been caught on camera indulging in a song which celebrates the derogatory jibes, with Celtic striker Griffiths pleading guilty to the offence in court.“There is nothing that I can see that reports anything happening on the day [24 December].

However, there is a responsibility on fans and players for how they conduct themselves,” said Dempster.” Hibs’ focus is now on their own Scottish Cup tie, against Bonnyrigg Rose, at Tynecastle tomorrow. Hibs will be without Kris Commons, whose emergency loan deal has expired and who has returned to parent club Celtic.

Dempster remains hopeful of a deal with the Parkhead side by which the attacker would return to the capital, at least until the end of the campaign.“We have spoken to Celtic about the possibility of that happening and there may be some opportunity there,” she said. “That is a conversation we will continue to have directly with the club and the player to see if we can take it to a conclusion.

It is not something we have completely ruled out.”Dempster has also admitted that while there is an adamance that key players will not be allowed to move on, there is scope to bolster personnel further. “The window does not shut until the 31st and my experience is that there is always another opportunity. However, if nothing else happens I will not be disappointed.”

"Observers sitting in the main stand" very unlikely in main stand areas any untoward comments will be hurled at players/officials.Observers should be given places in terracings as that is where abusive language(if any) is likely to occur.

Just out of interest, is it "racist" and "race hate" to call someone "refugee", or is it discriminatory? Or do we have a Czech race, an Irish race and whatever? Would it be racist if some over exuberant Yahoo calls me Hun in the street when he notices me speaking German?
