Celtic chief Peter Lawwell runs Scottish football claims former St Mirren chairman Stewart Gilmour

The one-time Paisley supremo put the Hoops man in the dock and criticised SPFL CEO Neil Doncaster, before facing difficult questions himself.

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell has been accused of running Scottish football. The claim was made by ex-St Mirren chairman Stewart Gilmour on BBC's radio show Sportsound .

When prompted to discuss if the big clubs are part of a cabal running the SPFL, Gilmour responded: "I think you're hitting the nail right on the head. I think that's one of the problems of having a weak Rangers , shall we say, obviously they're coming back and I don't mean any offence whatsoever in that. "I think it was healthier for the game when we had a strong Rangers so we had two particularly strong clubs."

Presenter Kenny McIntyre then asked Gilmour the question 'Who is running Scottish football?', to which Gilmour had no doubt.

"Oh, Kenny I don't think you need to ask me that. Are you trying to tell me that Peter's not pulling the strings? Peter Lawwell ?

"And by the way I don't mean any offence to Peter. Peter's job is the chief executive of Celtic Football Club and in terms of that job and his key primary role, Peter does a fantastic job.

"Does Peter do a great job for Scottish football? Hmm. How many times are we talking about new TV deals and various other things and trying to promote the game - and what comes out the box again? Us [Celtic] going to England.

"Some of the chairmen that attend the meetings will not take Peter on. I think he's got too much power on other clubs."

Hamilton chairman Les Gray was also on the show and disagreed with Gilmour, citing his time on the SPFL board and praised all clubs for coming together in the last few years to agree reconstruction.

Gilmour says Neil Doncaster's time is up as SPFL chief executive and claimed there was a loose agreement to oust him back in 2012.

He said: "If you look back through the whole Rangers saga and chairmen of Premier League clubs, and I won't embarrass them this evening, sat in a room in Gleneagles and said: 'Let's get all this sorted first of all and then we'll sort him."

Host McIntyre asked if he meant they wanted Doncaster gone, Gilmour added: "Yes. Chairmen of current Premier League clubs They all said 'we'll get the amalgamation [creation of SPFL] sorted then we'll sort that."He's got no credibility with supporters.

It's the way he has conducted himself throughout the whole time."

Former Buddies chairman Gilmour expressed his bemusement at certain kick-off times that take place due to television broadcasting of games, but was put on the spotlight by the panel when asked if he signed off on those TV deals.

"No one wants to watch football on a Saturday at 5.15pm, or at 4 on a Sunday," Gilmour said, but presenter McIntyre interrupted to ask why he couldn't have spoken up about the issue when he was in charge at the Paisley club.

"Don't blame the TV companies. If you agree to that deal and that contract, you can hardly complain at what time they want to play the games. You jumped into bed with the devil," said the Daily Mail's Stephen McGowan.

Nothing we didn't know already.Liewell's sporting integrity has set Scottish football decades and it may never recover from it.

The nine other SPL chairmen who voted Rangers out tbe SPL in 2012 had a duty to stand up to Liewell in the interests of Scottish football but bottled it. Voting Rangers out always meant would go to the bottom tier of the SFL. I cannot believe these chairmen didnt realise this

Since then the sponsorships & TV money Scottish fotball gets is derisory compared to other similar sized countries. And there is little chance of that situation improving any time soon.

The idea of Rangers being wiped out of Scottish football forever was an idea put forward to all spl clubs 5 years ago, a chance they thought to rid the country of its most successful side through simple hatred and a sense that success for themselves would be to a degree more easier to achieve.

An inviting idea indeed...

Aberdeen FC for example found silverware in 2013-14 for only the first time since 1999-00 when lifting the League Cup, they also achieved 'runners-up success' in the top league two years in a row...22 years have past since they last managed that magnificent feat. As for the Scottish Cup...you have to go back to the year 2000 to find an appearance from that awful club...they lost that one as well!

Dundee Utd: What can I say about that heinous club and its supporters?

Won nothing since Rangers were thrown out...reached TWO cup finals but failed in both of them. Got relegated even without Rangers being part of their league!

Hearts: Humped their 'great rivals' 5-1 in the 2012 Scottish Cup Final, no more success got relegated 2 years later.

Timmy, St Johnstone and ICT have managed to land the Scottish Cup during our time working up the leagues, relegated Hibs won it after our promotion back to the top...it'll be another 100 years before they'll win it again.

St Mirren grabbed silverware in 2012-13... a League Cup - then suffered relegation 2 years later, odds on for a further demotion out of Scottish football forever.

Ross County got some Hampden cheer, dumping Championship club Hibs in the 2015-16 League Cup Final.

Meanwhile during all this time only ONE club has benefited from the decision to 'kill' off Rangers as Scottish football sinks to new lows without serious sponsorship since the decision equivalent to turkeys voting for Xmas was taken 5 years ago.

Ach...wee Strachan has done no bad for himself too I suppose.
