GERS BET ROW Bookie refused to pay out £250,000 on a bet Rangers would be relegated as they were ‘not the same club’

Coral argued Albert Kinloch’s £100 wager at 2,500/1 — months before Gers’ financial implosion and demotion to the Third Division — was void

A BOOKIE refused to pay out £250,000 on a bet Rangers would be relegated as they were “not the same club” after they went bust, a court heard yesterday.

Coral argued Albert Kinloch’s £100 wager at 2,500/1 — months before Gers’ financial implosion and demotion to the Third Division — was void.

Bosses insisted the Ibrox side’s ejection from the top flight was not relegation. The Court of Session heard Coral’s lawyers sent Albert, 72, a letter stating: “They are not the same as the old Rangers”, along with a copy of the SFA rulebook.

But the pensioner told the hearing he had been “cheated”.

He said: “It was a clean bet, simply ‘Rangers to get relegated at 2,500/1 for £100’.

“There was no stipulation on how this would happen. If it wasn’t the same Rangers, how can they advertise ‘Old Firm’ on bookie forms?”

Bookmaker’s clerk Mr Kinloch, below, of Simshill, Glasgow, placed the bet at a Tollcross branch in the city in 2011 after reading blogs about the Ibrox cash crisis.

Months later the club went into administration and was booted out of the top flight after a vote by other clubs. The hearing is expected to end tomorrow.

I can't see how the bet was void, since it is provable through FIFA, UEFA and even the SFA and the SPFL that Rangers are the same Club. So the defence that the Club ceased to exist ergo they weren't relegated is false.

But as we all, and surely Mr Kinloch also knows, neither were we relegated. Clearly he was assuming we would be docked 30 points or so (don't remember the formula or the numbers quoted at the time) but that didn't happen.

So his claim is completely spurious and he is bound to lose. If he has any money Coral would probably claim and be awarded costs but it is a complete waste of the Court's time and he should pay for that as well.

Coral should pay up just for saying ‘not the same club’ - That is a false statement in a court of law.

Their argument should be about the bet itself on whether Rangers were relegated or not.

Hope the auld bassa loses and Coral are instructed to pay £250,000 to a charity of their choice and ordered to pay costs.
