During the 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium Celtic fans were seen in sections meant for City supporters and there was an outbreak of fighting after 73 minutes.

Uefa has decided sole responsibility lies with the Scottish club and announced the following charges against Celtic: “Setting off of fireworks and crowd disturbances. This case will be dealt with by the Uefa Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body on 23 February 2017.”

City had taken stringent measures to try to prevent trouble in the buildup to the match, and these were observed positively by Uefa. The club studied previous incidents involving Celtic in an attempt to anticipate any potential flashpoints and viewed the purchase history of any City fan who bought a ticket.

Efforts were made to track any onward sales on social media but the club accept this was not wholly successful. A perimeter fence was mounted around the Etihad Campus so that only those with tickets could enter the site.

The club is undergoing a post-game review and may attempt to locate those who sold on tickets and may take action against them.

10 charges in 5 years - an average of 2 a year... and this doesn't even consider all of their other antics on board flights, trains, boats to and from European competition.

The Greatest Fans In The World..... my arse !!!

The Greatest Scourge of Scotland would be more appropriate.

And it's not just in the grounds they're at it. The antics begin outside even before the match kicks off.

Celtic: Supporter arrested for throwing burger at police horse

A Celtic fan was arrested and fined £90 for throwing a hamburger at a police horse before the Champions League fixture at Manchester City on Tuesday.

Greater Manchester Police said the incident was one of 14 arrests made in connection with the game.

There were also reports of fans setting off fireworks on Greater Manchester's tram network.

The match at the Etihad finished 1-1 with City progressing to the knock-out stages and Celtic going out of Europe.

Superintendent Craig Thompson said the game passed "largely without incident".

About 30 people were ejected from the stadium - mostly away supporters for sitting in the home end.

Meanwhile a passenger on a tram heading to the Etihad Stadium revealed that Celtic fans set off pyrotechnics on a carriage ahead of the Champions League clash.

The terrified passenger said the tram filled with smoke while other visiting fans were 'were banging on the roof and chanting.'

Tram operators Metrolink say they are now investigating the incident.

One passenger, who didn’t want to be identified, says that travellers were left terrified by the explosions.

The man, who was travelling to Market Street on the Bury line at about 6pm, was unable to leave the service after hundreds of fans boarded at Shudehill and was forced to stay onboard until it reached the Etihad.

He added: “People were banging on the roof, chanting and stomping. “The fans weren’t letting anyone off or anyone on. “There were people there with kids who looked really scared.”

The passenger, like everyone else, was forced to stay on the tram until the fans all got off at the Etihad, where – he said – they all breathed a sigh of relief. He said: “People started throwing fireworks, and the carriage was left full of smoke when we all got off.

“I felt really sorry for this man who was travelling with his grandson, the young boy looked absolutely terrified.” "I'm a 34yr old man from Moss Side and I was worried for my safety. I can't imagine how the families felt."

A TfGM spokesman said: “We are aware of an earlier incident which involved a passenger setting off a flare on a tram while on their way to tonight’s match at the Etihad Stadium. “This isolated incident was both irresponsible and potentially dangerous and we will be working with police to investigate the matter further.”

Startled Mancunians took to Twitter to express their shock at the behaviour of the fans on their way to the stadium.

Elsie Wraighte said: “Well done 2 Celtic fans who shook tram w banging (sic), shoved each other at me & screamed ‘look at the f*nny!’ in my face just now #everydaysexism.”

Emma Preston said: “Unable to get a tram because all the Celtic fans are bouncing up and down inside them. This bl**dy city!!! #CityLife #UCL #Manchester.”

The Yahoos really have a sense of occasion and timing.

Twenty years after the Provos bombed Manchester, a 1,500 pound lorry bomb(the biggest detonated in the UK since WW2) on Corporation Street injured in excess of 200 people. Aware of the sensitivities involved, ra Sellik supporters indulged in an evening of IRA karaoke.

So charming!

The yahoos are the club no one wants but we're stuck with them in Scotland.

Liewell's fantasy about joining the EPL and becoming the biggest club in the UK is hilarious. The English know all about them now and wouldn't let them anywhere near their leagues. Why would they want a militant Irish republican club whose supporters hate all things British ?

One thing we should have learned these past four years is that they need us but we don't need them. Their home attendances in the top flight without us proved that.

I would hope therefore our board would have no qualms about joining a new league on our own in the future if they thought it was in our best interests to do so. Let them sink without us. I'd enjoy watching that.
