Neil McCann on MW Summer Signings

Recommended Posts

McCann has a bit of class about him as well as being a top analyst. He also works for Premier League TV in England and Co-commentates on a game each week and again always is spot on. He could offer a lot on the coaching field - I mean training ground (sounded a bit American there).

I can only see Garner ever fitting into a 4-4-2 playing off a mobile partner, thus far he is the new Boyd without the tap ins rather than Sebo. At least Sebo got himself about.

It's possible but unlikely in our current system; he's a good honest trier, not much more.

To go back to my original statement.

Like Sebo. You have just described him perfectly.

I that's twice you've agreed with me in under 2 hours? :D

I'll need to go back to being controversial.

The difference I would suggest is that we didn't rely on Sebo to play more than about 10 minutes a game. In fact it was a standing joke where I sat that it was in his contract that he only played a maximum of 10 minutes.

We are relying on Garner as our main striker and because we paid money for him, I fear he will continue to start ahead of Dodoo and the almost forgotten Waghorn. Waghorn is a proven goalscorer at Championship level where Garner failed and regardless of the fact that he might be off in January, we need his goals if he could recover some form. Garner isn't good enough at this level never mind Europe.

Rangers boss Mark Warburton hits back at Neil McCann and insists Joe Garner should get time to prove himself at Ibrox

MARK WARBURTON has hit back at former Ibrox star Neil McCann for his ‘cheap shot’ towards striker Joe Garner and criticism of his summer signing policy.

McCann claimed that striker Garner was ‘in the wrong movie’ as he tried to adapt to the style of play Warburton has implemented at Ibrox.

But the Englishman insists the 28-year-old should be given more time to prove himself as he attempts to get up to add to his three goals in Light Blue.

Warburton said: “‘If you want my honest opinion I’m disappointed when ex-players take cheap shots. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

“But to look at it on such a micro level? Look at the bigger picture.

“How long has Joe been here? How many games has he played?

“I saw recently in a presentation that Andre Grey scored two goals in 10.

“By his own admission Andre, who I have so much respect for, that he wasn’t playing the best.

“Had Scott Hogan not been injured he might not have played a few games.

“But he stayed and scored five in the next 10 games. Then four in the next 10. He ended up scoring 16 and leaving for £7million.

“But he scored two in 10 to begin with. At Brentford the focus was not quite so intense.

“Eventually he grew into a £30million striker, a magnificent player.

“Joe has been here such a short period of time and I was disappointed by cheap shots of that nature.”

After a lacklustre start to the season that saw them fall well off the pace being set by Celtic, Rangers moved up to second spot in the standings with victory over Partick Thistle last weekend.

A trip to Tynecastle tonight is another significant test for Warburton and his players but the Gers boss is pleased with the progress that is being made at Ibrox.

He said: “I am accused of picking up on the negatives but we have won five out of seven, we are unbeaten in 32 games at home.

“I read about how our wretched home form continues with a 1-1 draw. We are unbeaten in 32.

“Nobody mentions those stats. I do get frustrated by it because I think the players deserve a bit more.

“It is a tough place to go to, Partick. Other teams go to tough venues and win 1-0 and they have ground out a decent result.

“We have to use it. If it is a negative, use it and feed off of it. We are in a good position right now.

“Can we be more clinical in front of goal and get more rewards? Of course we can. But every team can get better.”

Well, let's hope Garner lays Hearts low tonight and scores the winner against the Sheep at the weekend. That would leave some journos and pundits eat some humble pie ...

BTW, I do rate McCann very highly and value his opinions. Which does not mean that I agree 100% with everything he says. IMHO he has been drawn into an unnecessary debate and should have known better at this stage of the season. Again, he - like all others - are welcome to suggest better signings than those we made (and were able to make). Hindsight is a wonderful thing and who can tell if any other suggested signing would have cut it with us.

Warburton really doesn't sound like a Rangers manager at times. An an unbeaten run with a bunch of draws at home is fine for a middling EC team but not for Rangers. Unbeaten at home is an erroneous statistic for our club without it being backed up by stats of a high number of wins and a very good away record. We really need about 2.5 points a game and about a 78% win rate to have a good chance of winning the league and a cup, and we're at 1.86 and 62%, and the latter is exaggerated by a lot of LC games against lower division teams.

Out of those 32 unbeaten games, only 9 have been against top tier teams.

Overall win rate is a much better metric for Rangers than unbeaten at home records - which in comparison is pretty irrelevant - winning 61 games home and away but losing 1 at home would be fantastic but not match that record...

Some say you can prove anything with stats but they are wrong, it's all about the relevance and qualitative assessment of the stats. Warburton is either at it here, has a bunker mentality, or not showing much nous. He needs to respect people's valid opinions and concentrate on changing those opinions by what happens on the pitch. Being in complete denial is very dangerous for our chances of success - you cannot change what you don't acknowledge.

Warburton looks to be consistently positive and therefore will always look to spin in a positive manner. I've got no idea whether he takes on board the constructive criticism or he is in denial on certain things but he's generally not going to let us or the press know either way.

We are sitting in 2nd place in the league,we need to be there as a minimum come the end of the season and we can achieve that,I will judge MW then,we are still a work in progress and are heading in the right direction,we do not have the right to think we can beat teams 3/4/5 zero, finshing 2nd will be progress!.

Exactly....progress must be ongoing & consistent.

Consider the goal of most teams that are promoted to the top division - Don't get relegated. Then consider that we are currently sitting in 2nd place, granted a bit further behind Ceptic than we'd hoped, but in 2nd none the less.

If that position can be maintained or at the VERY worst 3rd place, then we will be doing well with regard to progress.

After this season back in the top division we will reap increased rewards from league payouts & sponsorship etc, which can be re-invested back into the club & again aid with the progression.

So far, several of the latest signings haven't exactly set the heather alight, but there is still plenty of time & we aren't struggling to maintain league position.
