Rangers v Dundee match preview

Recommended Posts

Bit surprised at the negativity in this thread.

First half we played very well and were unlucky not to be a goal or two ahead. Second half we definitely lost our way a bit but we picked it up towards the end of the game and deserved our late winner.

As others have said, Dundee made no effort to attack (other than for a few mins in the second period) and the referee was appalling. No matter, we kept pushing and got our rewards.

To be honest I'm not sure what some people are expecting. Sure, in the game against County we were awful but yesterday we played fine and just lacked a bit of luck at times. Is it any wonder the players lack a bit of confidence and self-belief when thousands upon thousands leave early and are defended for it. 26mins gone and away to the pub? Gies peace!

If that game was "so bad", I wonder what you'd say if we have a "really bad game", i.e. one we all agree upon that it was "bad". I mean, it is all about opinions, but at some stage some sort of objectivity should step in and put things into perspective. And the only thing that can be said about or last few games - for a team of our current standard - that was "bad" is that we did not convert our chances.

It was a dominant performance simply lacking more goals. There were mere inches or even less in getting a touch on a ball that would have guided it into the net on multiple occasions. If that had happened the spectator and performance facets of it would have been more or less the same only the overall result would have been different. Would it still have been crap?

Well I wouldn't deny having certain concerns but from that list there is only one above us and they're only barely above us. Do they all have concerns?

RC were bottom of the league averaging 2 goals conceded a game and we couldn't beat them

people saying this team are playing well are at it IMO.

its torture watching this team try to create a chance and then convert it.

RC were bottom of the league yesterday morning and still managed to put 4 past fourth equal St Johnstone in Perth. They didn't get any past us and that's a St Johnstone who have drawn with Aberdeen in the league and narrowly lost to them by a late goal in a league cup tie. A St Johnstone who have played and beaten Hearts twice.

There are at least as many positives as negatives. The team are dominating possession and creating a host of chances but not putting them away on a regular basis. All things being equal we just have to start putting them away sometime.

Garbage can play football. IMHO, it is rather disrespectful to speak of the rest of the teams as "garbage", but that is everyone's own decision. At the end of the day, these teams play against us either parking the bus (and know how to do this), and/or try doing that and stopping us from playing with a pressing game that we are not used to (and at this moment and time able to do counter).*

To beat teams like that, who are full of as many professional footballers as we have, you need that extra bit of ability and quality. At times also quite a bit of luck too. But those chaps we have, while still very much able to dominate most other teams in Scotland, are not of that quality (yet). JFK has drawn various comparisons above, and when you look at the Scum, they are not sweeping these teams aside with goals galore either ... despite having players of a better standard. They carve out results, something we still have to achieve. At times it is rather irritating to see people can't help but demand standards and quality of our people that is simply not there, and despite knowing that fact. And if these players don't live up to these people's expectation and demands, they get it in the neck almost like there is no tomorrow. Very disappointing indeed.

BTW, I'm not saying we should accept everything that is being served up and "keep believing". There is no way how any reasonable person would accept the performance at the Scumhut. But in general, we play a decent enough type of football against teams that do next to nothing but stop us. And as frustrating as this is to watch, sometimes people would do well to look elsewhere but not our players if they search for reasons. It's not like we are playing without opposition on that field out there.

*NB Interesting to see how the Dundee players took turns in getting booked, much like Ross County did. The vital professional foul always delivered by someone else ...

Default First 13 league games since 1986

For all the talk of slow starts and all that, I decided to compare this season's first 13 games to the rest of our season's in the top flight since the arrival of Souness in 1986. I've put them all as 3 points a game (it was 2 points a game up until 1993/94). Here's they are (out of a possible 39 points and slower starts in bold)

Graeme Souness

86/87 - 28

87/88 - 21

88/89 - 33

89/90 - 24

90/91 - 25

Walter Smith

91/92 - 31

92/93 - 32

93/94 - 19

94/95 - 26

95/96 - 32

96/97 - 32

97/98 - 28

Dick Advocaat

98/99 - 26

99/00 - 34

00/01 - 25

01/02 - 30

Alex McLeish

02/03 - 35

03/04 - 32

04/05 - 30

05/06 - 22

Paul Le Guen

06/07 - 19

Walter Smith

07/08 - 28

08/09 - 30

09/10 - 28

10/11 - 34

Ally McCoist

11/12 - 35

Mark Warburton

16/17 - 23

Souness loved his slow starts didn't he ?

We did play well for good periods on Saturday and were unlucky in the first half. We created a few good chances up against a team who sat incredibly deep. Garner was unlucky with a couple, Holt chose the wrong option once or twice and the Thistle defence made three great last ditch tackles to stop certain goals. We could have had five goals easily.

Second half was less positive and a few players fell out of it - including Windass (who needs to be fitter), MOH (who drifts out of games too easily) and Miller (who got isolated wide left). However, we kept plugging away and still made a few chances - the problem being that, unlike in the first half, there was no support for Garner in the box. Indeed, when did finally provide that, we finally scored.

I totally understand people's frustrations about this team. They're inconsistent, often powderpuff and certainly not taking our chances well enough. However, we do play good football at times and the standard isn't as bad as many claim. We're also much better defensively - though are suffering from Tav not getting into the box as he used to.

At some point people have to move beyond OTT negativity and support the team. Our crowd may be buying tickets but many would be as well not attending.
