Rangers face competition to land Reece Oxford as Nottingham Forest enter the fray

Mark Warburton’s chances of landing West Ham prospect appear slim.

Rangers’ bid to sign West Ham prospect Reece Oxford is appearing unlikely to happen.Nottingham Forest have enquired about landing the 18-year-old defender on loan, reports the Mirror.

Earlier this month we revealed the Ibrox club had made contact with the Hammers over the highly-rated player. Oxford signed a new four-and-a-half year deal last month but has struggled for first-team opportunities this term and is likely to go out on loan.

But Rangers’ chances of signing him have taken a hit with English Championship side Forest now appearing to be the frontrunner. Mark Warburton is still trying to capture Port Vale keeper Jak Alnwick, with Rangers confident of signing the 23-year-old.

Matt Gilks has left Rangers after the Ibrox club tied up Jak Alnwick.Gilks signed for Mark Warburton last summer on a two-year deal.

But he has now left Scotland having failed to dethrone No.1 Wes Foderingham. It is believed the Scotland squad man will join Wigan.

Meanwhile, the deal for Alnwick has been completed.

Can't blame Gilks for wanting more chance of a weekly game.

As for Alnwick, well he's clearly one for the future and I suspect he'll be natural replacement for Wes should he be sold in the summer. After an impressive season I'd imagine there will be several suitors willing to pay good money.

Was there an agreed termination of Gilks contract?, I think he still had about 18 months left on his contract!

Anyone interested this from twitter

@tedermeatballs curious. Question. In your opinion. Will Warburton be manager next season?

@BMCRangersRants At this point in time, I would doubt it. There's a lot of friction behind the scenes. But things can change.

If you were building a wall its no use borrowing bricks from your neighbour after all when you give them back your wall will fall , lets start identifying young players and signing them lets build a team instead of acting like cowboy builders .

It wont fall if you only give back the borrowed bricks from the top :D

People could have said the same things about Jamie Vardy when he was playing for Fleetwood in non-league football..... and yet we continually (rightly so) want the club to buy low, sell high - but then bemoan us looking at the English leagues. We have plenty of fans who want us to scout far and wide to other leagues as if they are some kind of panacea - they aren't necessarily. Yes, we should be scouting as far as we can but there are no bigger guarantees from abroad.... just because they are foreign.

How do you know he isn't the answer ? Simple answer is, you don't. The same as I don't know he is the answer - only time would tell.

As for lacking direction - I thought we had all agreed that we needed a striker that could score goals for us ? And this is a guy that is scoring goals for fun. Is that not the direction we wanted, a goalscorer ? Now.... had you said a ship lacking finance the answer would probably have been different :(

Your answer is partly the point I'm making. We have no money yet can find £1m for an unproven striker from the bottom tier of English football? I agree we should take prospects from wherever we can Craig but this seems like desperation again. Joe Garner, for all his cult status and workmanlike showings, cost us £1.5-1.8m!! We paid well over the odds for him and I'm conscious we may be doing the same?

As for scoring goals, he may well be, However again we would be paying around the mill mark for someone who can score goals in the bottom tier of English football. That is not the same as our league(as awful as it is) or on the European front.

My point re lacking direction is a broad point tbh regarding the club a whole being stuck with the fat man. You are quite right though, I should have emphasised finance. We need some pronto. My points are merely concerns. Hopefully they will be misplaced.

Its all relative. Gilks obviously wants games at his stage of career, and perhaps Alnwick is a replacement for big Wes. Given Fod's form and progression, it would be no surprise to see a big club down south offer some serious money. There simply aren't that many GK's that are as consistently good with the gloves and his feet...

Spot on!, I think we can expect an interest for Wes in the summer

Which is why Gilks should maybe have considered staying. Wouldn't get a great deal of game time but he has played well when called upon. He too would have seen how well Wes has been playing and, if he were playing the long game, could have seen that he would be the incumbent in the summer if Wes moves on. Then Alnwick would be back-up to Gilks, giving Gilks the vast majority of game time and being seen by the Scotland manager (for all the good that would do given he would be playing in blue).

I just think that Gilks could maybe have stayed till the summer and then seen what happens with Wes. But you cant blame him for wanting more regular game time.
