Chelsea and Arsenal closing in on Rangers wonderkid Billy Gilmour

Written by* Danny Stewart, 29/01/2017

RANGERS should learn within the next fortnight whether their sustained efforts to hang on to wonderkid Billy Gilmour have paid off.

The 15-year-old midfielder, star of Scotland’s Victory Shield campaign, is wanted by London giants, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Both are willing to pay handsomely to seal a pre-contract deal now, rather than wait until he turns 16 in the summer.

That’s the stage where, under FIFA guidelines for under-23s, they will have a window in which they can pick him up for a compensation fee of just £100,000.

The Light Blues are desperate to keep Gilmour, and have been pulling out all the stops to persuade him his future is best served by staying put.

Manager Mark Warburton has even had him training with the first team, and recently waxed lyrical about his display for the Light Blues Under-20s in a game against an experienced Dundee side.

“Billy Gilmour is a Rangers player, and I hope very much that he sees a pathway here and works his way through to our first team,” said Warburton.“Just now he’s 15 and needs to be looked after properly and taken through his development.”Gilmour could be fast-tracked into the Light Blues’ first team in as little as 18 months.

Yet as much as being his current employers gives Rangers the opportunity to make a prolonged pitch to the player, they face daunting opposition for his signature.

On current form, Chelsea’s Academy is the best in England, with the west London club’s victory in the 2016 FA Youth Cup Final their third in a row, and their fifth in seven years.

And for an example of their pulling power, Rangers need look no further than across the city, where Islam Feruz was lured away from Celtic by Chelsea five years ago.

That the former Scotland youth international has markedly failed to live up to his potential would appear a warning, rather than a selling point.

Arsenal’s Academy, meanwhile, is renowned as being a conveyor belt for the Gunners’ first team.

Of the current side, Alex Iwobi, Francis Coquelin, Hector Bellerin, Kieran Gibbs and Jack Wilshere (on loan at Bournemouth) all came through the system.

Rangers loan midfielder Jon Toral is also a graduate, having been brought over from the Barcelona Academy at the same time as Bellerin.

Another is Gedion Zelalem, whom the Gunners loaned to Rangers last season.Like Chelsea, they also have a reputation of persuading highly-sought-after teenagers to join.

Either way, Rangers look set to win, with Gilmour set to commit one way or another rather than run down the clock on his deal.

Rangers wonderkid Billy Gilmour is a man in demand.

We first told you in November that London giants Chelsea and Arsenal were both keen on the 15-year-old midfielder who has also been watched by Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

Now, according to the Sunday Post the London rivals are now in a three-way battle with Gers for Gilmour - and are willing to pay handsomely to get the Scotland Under 16 star on their books.

Gilmour turns 16 in the summer and would then be available for a cross border compensation fee of around £100,000. But Chelsea and Arsenal are willing to pay more to get him on a pre-contract now.

Rangers close in on Port Vale keeper Jak Alnwick as Valiants boss admits 'that could have been his last game for us'

Talks between the two clubs are ongoing as Mark Warburton looks to add a goalkeeper to replace wantaway Matt Gilks.

Port Vale boss Michael Brown admits Rangers target Jak Alnwick could have played his last game for the club. The 23-year-old goalkeeper has a £250k buy-out clause which Rangers are understood to have met on Friday.

Talks between the two clubs are ongoing but Brown hinted after yesterday's win over S****horpe that the keeper has played his last game for the club.

Alnwick is under contract until the summer of 2018 and Brown said: "That possibly could be his last game for the club,"There is a good chance of that. He is still with us at the moment and we will see what the coming days bring."

Mark Warburton has been looking to add a goalkeeper to his Gers squad this January to replace want-away back-up keeper Matt Gilks.

Alnwick has made 79 appearances at Vale Park and he scooped the young player of the year award in his first season at the club.

He has been capped at both U17 and U18 level for England and is the younger brother of Bolton goalkeeper Ben.

Billy Gilmour hasn't made a decision yet on his future - I was speaking to someone who ran him home from training the other night.

Absolutely everyone at Rangers Academy says the kid is destined for the top. Not only that but he is also very humble from what I have heard.

The boy has more than a decade and a half ahead of him to make the big money. Hopefully he has wise counsel advising him that another 5 years or so at Rangers is his best option. Wise counsel wouldn't be some arsehole of an agent.

Jak seals Gers deal Port Vale keeper Jak Alnwick set to complete Rangers move

SunSport understands his move is likely to complete Gers' business in the January window

BY ANDY DEVLIN 29th January 2017, 10:30 pm

JAK ALNWICK will complete his move to Rangers tomorrow.

And SunSport understands that is likely to complete Gers’ business in the January window.

Port Vale keeper Alnwick travelled north following his side’s 3-2 defeat at Scunthorpe. He will undergo a medical tomorrow morning before signing a two-year deal.

The fee triggered a release clause in the 23-year-old’s contract, yet negotiations over instalments have still to take place. After Alnwick played at Scunthorpe, Vale caretaker boss Michael Brown all but confirmed his departure.

Asked if it had been his last game for the club, he said: “It could be, there is a good chance of that.“But he’s still with us and we’ll see what the coming days bring.”

Alnwick — back-up for Ibrox No 1 Wes Foderingham — will go straight into Mark Warburton’s squad ahead of Wednesday’s trip to face Hearts. But it looks unlikely that a deal for Reece Oxford will be done.

Gers had hoped to sign the West Ham defender on loan, but they have been unable to offload the central defender they needed to make that happen.Ibrox sources rubbished claims a deal to take wonderkid Billy Gilmour to Chelsea has been done
