Scotland's future XI according to FIFA 17

Scotland’s World Cup bid was reduced to ashes last night after another shattering defeat to England.

Under-fire Gordon Strachan could now be axed as national boss, with Alex McLeish touted as favourite to return.

But it could also signal the end of some of the nation’s stalwarts, including Scott Brown, Darren Fletcher and Russell Martin.

So where does that leave our ageing squad? Is it time to bring in fresh blood and look to the future?

Over The Score takes a look at some of our best prospects according to FIFA.

And if your building a team on career mode, it's not a bad starting XI!

Take a look for yourself and let us know whether you think this team could star for Scotland in the years to come...

GK - David Marshall

Rating: 76 Potential: 76

DESPITE Jack Hamilton's rise to prominence with Hearts, Marshall tops FIFA's potential charts.

And at just 31-years-old, it seems likely the Hull City goalie will be between the sticks for years to come.

LB – Andrew Robertson

Rating: 75 Potential: 83

WHILE Scotland isn't blessed with an array of talented footballers, we have an abundance of ability at left-back. And rated just ahead of Kieran Tierney, Robbo gets the No3 jersey.

The ex-Dundee United star has proved a sensation since moving down south and is likely to play a crucial role for the national team in the coming years.

CB – John Souttar

Rating: 66 Potential: 79

CENTRE-BACK is a real issue for Scotland just now. But Hearts kid Souttar could soon be about to solve the crisis.

The 19-year-old has excelled since joining the Tynecastle side in January and has been tipped to have a big future in the game, with the likes of Aston Villla monitoring his progress.

CB – Grant Hanley (sorry folks)

Rating: 73 Potential: 78

BAD news folks. It looks like £5million Newcastle man Hanley is our best option in central defence.

Hard to believe, we know. But he's still young and learning. Let's hope the 24-year-old can produce better performances in a Dark Blue shirt than the horror show against England.

RB – Callum Paterson

Rating: 68 Potential: 78

ANOTHER rising prospect at Tynecastle, Paterson is your typical modern day full-back.

Terrific going forward, but suspect defensively. Still, there's years of development left in the youngster yet, especially if he wins a move down south soon.

RM – Oliver Burke

Rating: 68 Potential: 84

HE'S Scotland's most expensive player. So we're going to expect some decent performances at national level.

The £15million winger has hit the ground running since joining Budesliga side RB Leipzig. All he needs now is a chance in Dark Blue.

CM – Liam Henderson

Rating: 63 Potential: 79

IF there's one thing we know about Henderson, it's that he can 'deliver'. Just ask Hibs fans.

Still just 20, the midfielder is starting to feature more at Celtic under boss Brendan Rodgers. The next couple of years could be crucial for Hendo's development.

CAM – Ryan Gauld

Rating: 73 Potential: 84

ONCE hailed as the 'mini Messi', Gauld has struggled since moving to Sporting Lisbon. But he's still being touted as Scotland's biggest prospect, by FIFA anyway.

Let's just hope the ex-Dundee United kid's loan spell at Vitoria F.C. will help kick-start his career so he can begin to live up to his undoubted potential and begin starring for Scotland.

CDM – James McArthur

Rating: 78 Potential: 78

CRYSTAL PALACE ace McArthur has got off to a stunning start to the season, netting five goals in just 13 games.

That's not bad for a Premier League midfielder. So the question is, why hasn't the ex-Hamilton kid played more for Scotland? Surely has more to offer over the next few years.

LM – Ryan Fraser

Rating: 72 Potential: 80

IT was feared Fraser would become another promising Scottish youngster lost to the English game when Bournemouth snapped him up from Aberdeen three-years ago.

But the 22-year-old has actually went from strength to strength down south, enjoying a successful loan spell at Ipswich last season. Now, he's featuring regularly in the Premier League for Bournemouth.

ST – Tony Watt

Rating: 70 Potential: 80

WATT had the world at his feet after THAT goal against Barcelona in the Champions League.

Since then, he's been at six clubs in four years. Now back in Scotland at Hearts, let's hope the striker can get his career back on track and start hitting the net on a regular basis again.

SUBS: Robby McCrorie (POT:72), Kieran Tierney (POT: 82), Stephen Kingsley (POT: 81), Lewis MacLeod (POT:78), Ryan Christie (POT: 78), Oliver McBurnie (POT:78) Leigh Griffiths (POT: 78)
