OFFICERS are examining two mobile phones belonging to the striker as part of their investigation.

RANGERS striker Kenny Miller has been named as a key witness in an alleged gangland extortion plot.

Detectives are examining two mobile phones connected to the 36-year-old star as part of their investigation.

Officers arrested Billy Steele, 35, after he was accused of demanding £40,000 from the daughter of a notorious gangland figure with links to the vice industry.

Steele is alleged to have demanded the cash as compensation for a pair of diamond earrings that were lost during a rammy involving the woman and Miller’s wife Laura.

It is claimed he went to the woman’s home in Bothwell, Lanarkshire, on Wednesday night where she and her boyfriend were threatened for the cash.

A source said: “This all goes back to an incident about eight weeks

ago between Kenny’s wife Laura and another woman.

“Laura lost her earrings during a fight. Steele appears to have gone round of his own volition, looking to get the cost of them back.”

Police went to private school Hamilton College on Thursday, where they waited to arrest Steele but failed to apprehend him.

He then handed himself in at a nearby police station.

Miller co-operated with police, who took two mobile phones they believed to be used by the former Scotland star.

The brawl involving Laura happened on September 10, when trouble flared at Da Luciano in Bothwell just hours after Celtic beat Rangers 5-1.

Up to 20 people were involved in the fracas, which spilled out into the Italian restaurant’s car park. Police were called to the incident at about 9pm but arrived after the trouble had passed.

They scoured CCTV footage of the bust-up amid claims that a man had been seen entering the venue brandishing a lock-back knife.

Miller stepped in after Laura, 28, was slapped in the face during the brawl. She suffered a black eye and a scratch to her forehead.

A source said: “All hell broke loose, it was complete chaos.

“A lot of punches were thrown and Laura was grabbed by her hair. She lost her earrings, which cost about £45,000.”

Mum-of-two Laura later posted photographs on her Instagram page showing the scratch above her eye.

She also posted a picture of her ear, captioned: “My substitute earrings are not very cool.”

Police confirmed at the time that they had been called to a report of a

disturbance at a restaurant on Silverwells Crescent, Bothwell.

The Millers recently moved to the area after the striker sold his home on the outskirts of Glasgow to his ex-Scotland teammate Robert Snodgrass.

Da Luciano, a favourite haunt of Old Firm players, was named Best Newcomer in the Scottish Entertainment Awards in 2014.

Steele, of Hamilton, appeared in private at the town’s sheriff court on Friday in relation to two charges of attempted extortion.

He made no plea or declaration and was remanded in custody.

The case was committed for further examination and he is due back in court this week.

A police spokeswoman confirmed: “A 35-year-old man was arrested on

November 4 in connection with alleged offences including attempted extortion.

“Police inquiries are continuing.”

Miller first joined Rangers in 2000 from Hibs in a £2million deal before signing for Wolves for £3million a year later.

He spent five years in England before joining Gers’ Old Firm rivals Celtic on a Bosman transfer. He then headed to Derby County.

The forward returned to Rangers in 2008 for another £2million fee. He stayed for three years before leaving for Turkish club Buraspor.

The player, who has 69 Scotland caps, then signed for Cardiff City and Vancouver Whitecaps before joining Rangers for a third time in 2014.

Miller is expected to be in the squad for the Ibrox club’s Scottish Premiership clash away to Ross County at noon today.

Rangers and Miller’s agent Liam O’Donnell last night declined to comment.

The woman at the centre of the alleged extortion bid was unavailable for comment.

It’s understood she raised the alarm after Steele left her home.

Her dad said last night: “It’s not for me to say what happened.

“It’s not my place but it isn’t rocket science.

“There’s a legal process under way so I’m not going to comment on anything at the moment.”
