England vs Scotland will be shown live on STV

Sorry to repeat myself from other matches, but is Fletcher still on the field ?

For playing that absolute dud alone every one of the last few Scotland managers deserved to be sacked and I hope Chesney does the honourable thing tonight straight after the whistle blows. And takes that useless cant McGhee with him.

Thought Wallace was one of our better players, if not the best.

Anyone that wants Griffiths in that team clearly cant see how little he actually brings to the team - greedy bastard that thinks only of himself.

GORDON WADDELL rates the Dark Blues after a massively disappointing result against England despite a spirited display.

SCOTLAND

Craig Gordon 6

Shock choice ahead of David Marshall for his first competitive cap in seven years. Helpless at the goals but the rest of his game was solid. Confidence in his distribution has grown under Brendan Rodgers but was forced to shell early a lot under pressure from pace of Sturridge.

Ikechi Anya 6

Played right back against Qatar 18 months ago but a whole different world with Lallana and Sterling tag-teaming you. Still, held his own defensively most of the night. The attacking out ball he’s given us so often was curtailed with him on the back foot, however.

Grant Hanley 5

One league start all season and while his commitment was unquestionable,

his sharpness wasn’t.

Unlucky at the opener, blocking Sterling’s shot taking him out of the mix to defend the near post but nowhere as Cahill ran off him at the third. Will mainly be remembered for the primary school-esque header over the bar at 1-0.

Christophe Berra 5

Deserved start ahead of Russell Martin for the Ipswich ever-present but had his hands full with the menace of Sturridge on his shoulder.

Not sharp enough to make the space on Sturridge for the first and when you lose three headed goals in game, the centre halves need to have a long look at themselves.

Lee Wallace 6

Three years on from his last cap and six from his last start, he actually started well and pushed on.

But a lack of care with the ball was frustrating at times when the back four were under pressure. Also caught ball watching badly as Lallana came late for a free header at England’s second.

Darren Fletcher 6

Looked like a man keen to prove something against players he faces every week. Fluffed an early shot but fought his corner well in the middle of the park to break up play as England tried to play the game through them from the back.

Scott Brown 7

Three months of retirement has done the Celtic midfielder no harm. Started the game with a fury, perpetual motion as he orchestrated the pressing and certainly didn’t need an armband on to show his leadership. Wind came out of his sails like everyone else after the third but dug in nonetheless.

Robert Snodgrass 6

Desperate to play after fighting back from injury in a hurry and gave his lot. Rightly furious with Griffiths in the first half for ignoring a brilliant run into space, and tested Hart in the second half as well, but had run his race after an hour and started labouring.

James Morrison 6

First league start of the season last weekend and like Hanley, it showed in his sharpness if not his effort. Pushed hard as England tried to play their way out from the back, and a willing runner back to support Brown and Fletcher, but if you’re playing the 10 role, there has to be more creativity.

James Forrest 6

Playing on his ‘wrong’ side allowed him to cut in and give Wallace room to move outside early. Full of industry, pressed the game really well as the front four went hunting the England defence, but another who spurned a great chance at the start of the second half with a great look from the edge of the box.

Leigh Griffiths 5

Doesn't get a game when he’s scoring for breakfast, lunch and dinner, then starts when he’s rusty. Sod’s law for the Celtic striker, and his desperation to make an impact shone through with his decision to go for goal rather than play Snodgrass in. Ever willing but couldn’t take advantage of a vulnerable pairing.

Subs:

James McArthur: On for Morrison with 25 left and three down. Thankless task. 3.

Callum Paterson: Replaced Anya late as Scotland moved to a three, looking for a miracle. 3.

Matt Ritchie : relieved Snodgrass of his duties with 10 left. 2.

Manager: Gordon Strachan. 6.

Brown battles

One figure - and certainly not a combative, aggressive central midfielder - was unlikely to turn Scotland's fortunes around.

Even so, the sight of Scott Brown snapping into tackles, urging and marshalling his team-mates and generally bringing a restless energy to Scotland's play, will have been reassuring to Strachan.

The timing of the Celtic captain's retirement was damaging to a manager suddenly robbed of Brown's services against Lithuania and Slovakia.

But Brown's scurrying play, his spiky demeanour and his steeliness all brought at least an edge to the team's midfield.

Brown has left the question of the length of his return open and much of the decision would have been based on the strength of his relationship with Strachan, and the manager's position will likely impact the midfielder's international future.

As he refused to be quelled by the circumstances of the game - undaunted late into the game as he clashed with Jordan Henderson during the second-half - there was the conviction that Scotland remain better served by Brown remaining involved.
