FIFA's decision comes in the wake of poppy row over next week's England v Scotland clash at Wembley.

THE Republic of Ireland have been charged by FIFA after wearing a symbol on their jersey to mark the 100th anniversary of the Easter Rising.

The news has come in the wake of the poppy row ahead of Scotland's World Cup qualifier against England at Wembley next Friday.

Wearing the poppy has been deemed to be a political statement by FIFA.

Football's governing body, however, had been accused of double standards having taken no action against Ireland when they wore the centenary jersey against Switzerland on 25 March.

Chairman of the Commons' Culture, Media and Sport select committee, Damian Collins MP, said: "That appears to be an absolutely classic example of leniency being shown to other countries."

The Royal British Legion has now written an open letter to FIFA urging it to lift its ban on the England and Scotland national football teams wearing the poppy.

Both the SFA and the English FA have committed to wearing black armbands bearing poppies for the match which falls on Remembrance Day, despite FIFA's instruction not to.

FIFA's statement on the poppy issue said: "FIFA fully respects the significance of commemorating Remembrance Day on 11 November each year.

"The Laws of the Game are overseen by the International Football Association Board (composed of the four British FAs and FIFA) and applicable to all 211 member associations.

"The relevant Law 4, para. 4, clearly states that the player equipment should not carry any political, religious or commercial messages.

"The Laws are applied uniformly in the event of similar requests by any member association to commemorate similar historical events."

Disciplinary proceeding have now been opened against Ireland, further indicating that Scotland and England can expect to be hauled over the coals should they proceed with their poppy commemoration next week.
