A jag in the bum. Rangers v Partick Thistle Preview

Recommended Posts

Agree with this, couldn't understand moving Waghorn last week after scoring 3 as a striker.

While it's fine that you disagree with it, and who won't on hindsight, I think there is a clear logic to it, which makes it somewhat understandable. Garner is supposed to be very good as a centre forward and Waghorn has been pretty useful up front, on the right in the past, and so the combination with McKay on the left looked quite potent - on paper.

Waghorn did score a hat-trick the previous game but it was a step down in quality from second in the top tier.

So now the decision is whether to give it time to click, or change tack to drop Garner and put Waghorn in the middle. But Garner was brought here for a reason, and mainly because Waghorn has not been as prolific in the middle as we needed, so I can see MW sticking with it.

No, I don't expect Garner to be dropped either, although I am not sure about Waghorn playing wide, to me he just doesn't look interested.

It would be interesting to see Waghorns scoring rate when played as a striker. As for Garner, I couldn't give figures but I am led to believe he has never been a prolific scorer.

Garner can only play centrally. Waghorn can play wide but is nowhere near the same goal threat out there as he is centrally. It was my biggest gripe about Miller starting centrally with Waghorn wide, you are weakening your side in two positions to include certain players. Garner, to date, has been a massive disappointment. Does the manager keep faith with his £1.8M biggest signing and hope he comes good, perhaps dropping a few more points along the way, or bin him now, play Waghorn centrally and try to win games, thus admitting Garner doesn't fit into the side.

I'm glad I don't have to make that call. And what does it say for Dodoo, who has become the forgotten man and another dud signing (to date)?

If I had to make the call, I would keep faith with Garner for the Thistle game at least, given we have another 2 week break after this, and hope Waghorn can have a better game from wide and get into the box more. By all accounts if we can get Garner scoring and confident we should see a different player from his efforts to date, and a home game against another bottom 6 side is about as good a game as we could have picked for tomorrow.

I can't see any changes from Sunday for tomorrow, if the same squad is available. I would drop Wilson and give Senderos a chance with Hill, play Nico with Halliday & Holt in midfield to allow Forrester to play wide with Barry rested as he looks as if he needs it.

I might shuffle a few feathers but I'd rest McKay, who simply hasn't been at his best when starting of late. Forrester and Dodoo (a left winger by trade) are able "subs".

Foderingham

Tavernier/Hodson - Hill - Wilson - Wallace

Holt - Halliday - Windass

O'Halloran - Waghorn - Forrester

This would be my starting 11, with Dodoo and McKay plus Kranjcar as prime subs, Garner as a swap for Waghorn when needed.

I just hope MW will see sense & change the system we're playing tomorrow.

We need two strikers up front playing thro' the middle getting good deliveries from wide areas.

One thro' the middle in this league isn't working. We're not scoring enough goals
