Rangers' performance at Pittodrie shows they WILL finish above Aberdeen: Hugh Burns

Couldn't agree with him more and i'm puzzled that others don't see it. The sheep cannot be that lucky on a regular basis and we can't be that unlucky either. The performances are kicking in and I expect them to become even better. Chance alone dictates that the results must inevitably come too.

FORMER Rangers star Hugh Burns believes his old club’s Pittodrie performance proves they will finish above Aberdeen in the final Premiership table.

The Ibrox side are enduring a torrid time. With just nine points collected from their opening seven games in the top-flight, and defeat at the hands of Derek McInnes’s men plunging the Light Blues into the bottom six.

Boss Mark Warburton’s tactics, decision making and signing policy are now under increased scrutiny through these initial weeks of toil back in the big time. However, Burns reckons it’s time for a reality check.

He insists that it was always going to take time for the team to adjust to the higher level following promotion from the Championship – and that he has been taken aback by the standard of the Premiership .

Burns says it’s silly to slaughter Warburton and his players and feels Sunday’s display offers concrete proof that Rangers are ready to come good.

He said: “I honestly don’t think that Rangers are far away.

“Having witnessed the full 90 minutes at Pittodrie, I also think that Rangers will finish above Aberdeen at the end of the season if they play as they did against them on Sunday for the rest of the season.

“I can’t see the gap being bridged to Celtic. They have burst the bank with the boy Scott Sinclair.

“It’s hard for anyone connected with Rangers to accept that but it is going to take time. Rangers fans are not blessed with patience. They want their team to be winning every week, regardless of who they are playing.

“That’s how it has been for years and it’s an expectancy. But I do believe there is a realism starting to kick in among some of the supporters now after just seven league games.

“I watched Rangers against Ross County. They played well and made enough chances to win two or three games. At Pittodrie, Rangers outplayed Aberdeen for long spells in the game.

“Aberdeen just dropped off and were unable to close Rangers down.

“At half-time, I couldn’t believe Rangers were not winning and, when it went to 1-1, I felt they’d go on to win the match. At no time did I feel Rangers would lose and it was only a piece of absolute magic which sank them.”

Burns added: “I thought referee John Beaton had a great game apart from awarding the free-kick which led to the goal. That was his only boo-boo but it was a costly one for Rangers. He has called a tackle from behind when he is trying to catch up the play.

“But, although disappointed to lose, I’m sure Mark Warburton would have gone back down the road with David Weir on Sunday and thought, ‘We are not far away’.We’re talking about a rebuilding job here.”

Burns also accepts that, along with himself, a number of Rangers fans may have been guilty of under-estimating the top fight.

He said: “Rangers are playing at a better level.

“I’ll hold my hands up, it’s a better level than I believed it was. Some of the stuff I have seen has been of a high quality.

“Look at the free-kick winner scored by James Maddison for Aberdeen. If that’s in England, we’re watching replays of it all day. At the start of the season, I spoke to people and I felt Rangers could do really well and be up there challenging for the title.

“But it’s not until you are back in the division you realise it won’t be that easy. I thought Rangers would kick on after winning at Dundee, even if they were fortunate to get the last-minute winner against Motherwell in the following match.

“That is the bottom line and I’m seeing excellent teams. Last season, I was watching Rangers steamroller teams in the Championship and I wasn’t sure the standard was that good in the top flight.”

Burns, right, knows there are deficiencies and a failure to keep clean sheets is killing Gers. He said: “It’s a just a pity there is not a big, raw centre-half coming through the ranks at Murray Park.

“I liked the partnership of Rob Kiernan and Danny Wilson and still believe they could work in the top flight.”

Second highest resources in financial terms but not all for spending on football side, much is being spent on fabric of stadium which is slowly showing signs of improvement.

As I keep saying we have to walk before we can run and in terms of SPFL we are probably at toddling stage,as performances strengthen so will results so let's be patient and sensible.

No we wont. We are in 7th place in the league on the 2nd highest resources, the world is about to end :ninja:

Depressing stuff on here tonight let me tell you...

OK you convinced me. Hugh Burns is an idiot and sitting 3 points off second spot means we're relegation contenders. Get used to it. ;)3

It's an awful position to be in when an ex-player like Hugh Burns (who wasn't exactly top drawer) is saying we are unlucky, could be his opinion is based on how lucky he was in wearing the Jersey. Luck lucky same thing.

People like Burns can dress everything up as they like, but of course We the People don't buy crappy scum newspapers and can make our own minds up for ourselves. Hugh Burns has taken a pocket size and has reached far less levels than he ever achieved as a Rangers player. The media in this country always seem to find some obscure player from us who is willing to toe the party line and say what appeases them.

As you have already noticed...I don't understand why any ex-player would want to talk to the scum that is our media today, never mind the DR.

We will finish above Aberdeen if we change our system to play two up front.

That means going to a 3-5-2 or 4-4-2 instead of 4-3-2-1 which becomes 4-3-3 going forward.

We need to start scoring more goals in the league
