UEFA to hear Celtic case over Palestinian flag display next Wednesday

Recommended Posts

CELTIC'S case has been postponed until next Wednesday - the same day the Hoops host Manchester City in the Champions League.

UEFA's disciplinary hearing over the display of Palestinian flags during Celtic's Champions League qualifying win over Israel's Hapoel Be'er Sheva has been postponed until Wednesday.

The European governing body opened proceedings over "illicit banner" charges following last month's game at Parkhead.

The hearing was due to be held today but has been put back until Wednesday - the same day Celtic play Manchester City in the competition.

Celtic have been punished eight times in five seasons by UEFA for their supporters' behaviour, including a fine of about £16,000 two years ago after a Palestine flag was displayed at a Champions League qualifier against KR Reykjavik.

The Scottish champions could be made to close a stand for a future European match if UEFA decide to get tough this time.

The UEFA rule in question forbids the use of "gestures, words, objects or any other means to transmit any message that is not fit for a sports event, particularly messages that are of a political, ideological, religious, offensive or provocative nature".

UEFA did it before ... with Inter

... and a couple of years ago with CSKA Moscow too.

UEFA have found the Russian club's supporters guilty of racist behaviour for the third time in the space of a year.

CSKA must now play their next three European home games in a closed stadium and they are also banned from selling tickets for their away game at City on November 5, as well as being fined £156,700 (€200,000).
