Dean Windass: Mark Warburton should build his side around my boy Josh

Recommended Posts

DEAN WINDASS has urged Rangers boss Mark Warburton to make son Josh central to his Ibrox blueprint after his impressive Old Firm debut.

The 22-year-old was the stand-out performer for the Gers as they crashed to a 5-1 derby defeat to Celtic on Saturday.

Windass has made a positive impression since making the move from Accrington Stanley in the summer as he penned a four-year deal.

And dad Dean reckons there is plenty more to come from the midfielder as he bids to make a name for himself at Ibrox in the coming months.

Windass Snr said: “'The Celtic that Brendan is building has energy and pace. In my opinion, I don't think Rangers have enough legs in their team. If you look at guys like Scott Sinclair and James Forrest, Celtic do.

“In my opinion, there is only Josh and Barrie McKay in the Rangers team are going to unlock the door. They need more than that.

“Give Josh the ball because he has pace and power. In my opinion as a supporter and a dad, he didn't get the ball enough. When he did get on the ball he did something with it.

“Listen, Josh is still young, he's learning the game and has come from Accrington.

“But the one thing you know is that when he gets the ball, he makes things happen. But it's not just about Josh, it's about the team.

“I spoke to Josh [on Monday morning]. It was an experience he's never had before. He said to me he had to take a couple of paracetamol when he left the ground because the noise the Celtic supporters made when they scored was so loud it gave him a headache.

“But to play in that stadium with that atmosphere at 22 years old will only help him learn.

“He did not let himself down but you only need to look at the scoreline to see Celtic were a lot stronger.

“Josh isn't happy with the result obviously but was with how he played. I was too, he did okay.”

I must be the only bear, along with the two or three standing beside in Bar72, that completely forgot he was playing until well into the second half. I thought he was anonymous but it seems the majority think he was our best player. I must have been thinking he was someone else for an hour!!

As for build a team around him, in the same way we shouldn't write off the majority of the summer signings after a few lacklustre displays, let's not get carried away with one decent appearance (if it was that).

If his game is all about pace, drive, attacking, then that ticks a lot of boxes that others don't, but let's see if he can stay injury-free for more than 2 games and deliver some consistency before we start getting all excited. We should surely know that by now.

Build the team around Windass, Holt, McKay - all 3 have pace, can unlock defences and are young.

While these attributes are all what we desire, let's build the team, like all title winning sides, around a solid defence.

Unfortunately we need to wait another 16 weeks till the window re-opens before we can even start to put that right!

In the days where any half decent player will be off to England at the first sign of interest, we can't really be building our team around any player. I think it's a silly idea anyway, unless you have a world class player in the team. Get 11 decent players out on the park - it's not complicated.
