Celtic player ratings

Craig Gordon 8 : Pulled off a terrific save from Traore shot and also kept out Hofmann effort. Left exposed at times and could do little for Stindl's goal which was drilled under him from acute angle or Toure's cock-up for second.

Mikael Lustig 6: Seemed to turn back too often in possession and couldn't quite get going with Forrest on right flank. Delivered cracking cross for Sinclair's header wide but was more focused on defensive duties.

Kolo Toure 4: Disastrous night for him. Caught in too minds whether to mark Stindl who was dropping off or staying put. Distribution was poor and made mistakes for two Borussia goals – out-muscled by Hahn for first then gifted him a second.

Eric Sviatchenko 7: Did well at the back to cover Toure's errors and made a brilliantl last ditch tackle in the second half to prevent Hahn from putting Germans two-up. Tried to build attacks from left centre-back position.

Kieran Tierney 6: Not his usual explosive self down the left where he usually links up with Sinclair but that was largely due to the tricky Traore pinning him back for most of the game. Tough night for the youngster but will learn from it.

Nir Bitton 5: Has to be one of his worst nights in a Celtic shirt where nothing came off for him. Too negative with his passing and wasn't secure enough when he had it. Didn't get close to danger man Stindl who was running show behind him.

Scott Brown 6: Like Bitton he allowed Stindl too much room to operate but at least the skipper tried to drive Celtic forward. Got deeper in second half by going to collect ball from Gordon and start moves but that played into Borussia's hands.

James Forrest 6: Just couldn't get at Swedish left-back Wendt often enough and when he did they doubled up on him and didn't allow crosses in. Did a proper shift on the flank off the ball but ineffective going forward.

Tom Rogic 7: Produced the pass of the night for Sinclair in the first half but the winger wasted it by blasting over. Tried to find pockets of space in front of Monchengladbach defence and get on the half-turn but wasn't decisive enough.

Scott Sinclair 6: Looked Celtic's best chance of a goal but denied by Sommer early on then squandered golden chance from Rogic pass when he should have done better. Showed good movement coming in off the left.

Moussa Dembele 6: Showed flashes of his ability but it was all outside the box. Starved of service inside it and never looked like getting in behind the Germans. Played superbly weighted ball for Sinclair chance early on but didn't get a sniff of goal.

Dunno, I take it the ratings go from 1 to Messi ... ahem 10. How can Bitton have his worst night with nothing coming off and getting an average? Or Toure giving two goals away and still getting 4? Anyone got Kiernan's, Senderos' and Barton's scores at the OF game.

 

BTW, one of my first English articles that I read went on about "Teutonic efficiency" when we played Gladbach in the 1980s. My first Rangers game as well, live on TV that is.

These ratings are meaningless. They were given higher ratings against City simply because City are a top side who they were lucky to catch a time they had begun misfiring. City had lost their previous match 2-0 and the one before that was a 1-1 draw at home. City just weren't playing to their capabilities which made them look a shade better.

 

Monchengladbach who aren't on the same level as City and were hammered 4-0 by them at Maine Rd simply played to their capability and that's too much for ra sellick. It's like putting a midget in against Mike Tyson in his prime then giving the midget a poor rating when gets demolished but a good rating in his previous fight when he beat another midget half his size.

I remember Rangers defeating B Gladbach 3-2 at Ibrox circa 73/74. A sixteen year old Alex O'Hara notching a couple. Truly, the highlight was watching Gunter Netzer strolling around the Ibrox turf, spraying passes with the outside of the boot. A wonderful player.

I remember Rangers defeating B Gladbach 3-2 at Ibrox circa 73/74. A sixteen year old Alex O'Hara notching a couple. Truly, the highlight was watching Gunter Netzer strolling around the Ibrox turf, spraying passes with the outside of the boot. A wonderful player.

 

A difference is that Gladbach team had at least one player in his prime who went on to win the world cup just as the Bayern Munich side Rangers defeated on the way to a cup winners cup win contained the nucleus of a world cup winning side in their prime.
