Andy Halliday insists finishing second to Celtic will NOT be good enough

HALLIDAY adamant that no-one within the Ibrox dressing room will be happy to play second fiddle to their Glasgow rivals.

ANDY HALLIDAY insists second place won’t be good enough for Rangers in the Premiership title race this season.

Chairman Dave King said last week that finishing behind Celtic at the end of their first year back in the top flight would be acceptable.

But midfielder Halliday, who helped Gers win 2-1 at Dundee yesterday, claims no one in Mark Warburton’s dressing-room should be content to play second fiddle to their Old Firm rivals.

He told MailSport : “This club will never settle for second place. That’s no disrespect to Celtic , Aberdeen , Hearts or anyone else in the league.

“They all have their own ambitions. But I don’t believe for a second that anyone at Rangers will be happy to finish second in the Premiership.

“That’s the nature of the beast, it’s the way this club is. And it’s why the manager has brought in the calibre of players he has over the summer.

“It’s going to be a tough first season back in the Premiership, no one is doubting that. But with the players we have here, we must be aiming to finish first.”

Boss Warburton is still hoping to add to his ranks ahead of the transfer window closing and Preston striker Joe Garner is a target.

North End boss Simon Grayson last night confirmed Gers were keen on the 29-year-old but insisted he wanted to keep Garner at the club.

He said: “Rangers are sniffing around, they are wanting to try and take Joe Garner. We have had an enquiry but we are not looking to sell.

“If anyone comes in with an offer we will contemplate it and do the right thing for this club. But we don’t want to sell anyone.”

For all the great work King has done in getting rid of the ****s, taking on Ashley and settling things down he does have a tendency to let his tongue get away from him at times. No Rangers chairman should ever publicly concede that second is ok, even if this season it would probably be ok as long as it is not a distant second. There would have been nothing wrong with saying we will always set out to win the title at this club while conceding it would be a monumental achievement given the vast difference in resources. We should always be playing up the huge gulf in resources, thus applying the pressure to celtic that they can only blow it given their budget compared to ours, while taking the pressure off ourselves a little in the media. Behind the scenes of course it would be different.
