SEASON SO FAR

Stranraer started their season by playing three pre-season friendlies throughout July, against a Partick Thistle XI, Dumbarton and AFC Flyde winning all three matches.

The competitive action started for Brian Reid’s side after that and in two games in the League Cup, Stranraer have won two, scoring five goals and conceding two in 3-1 and 2-1 wins over East Sitrlingshire and Annan Athletic respectively.

Following the match against the Gers on Monday night, Stranraer will face Motherwell next Saturday at Fir Park.

OPPOSITION VIEW

Stranraer Manager Brian Reid: “We’re delighted to have the game and for me personally it’s the first time I’ll be going back to Ibrox as a manager. I’m certainly looking forward to that and hopefully the team can put in a decent performance.

“Obviously it’s going to be very difficult and Ibrox will be buzzing with a lot of fans coming out to see their new players. So it will be exciting for everybody and I think the new League Cup sections are quite a good thing; it adds a wee bit of excitement at the start of the season.”

FAST FACTS

Rangers won the competition in the only previous season that they have faced Stranraer, beating Aberdeen 2-1 in the final at Hampden in October 1992, having defeated the Stair Park side 5-0 two months earlier in the third round.

Since 2000, only two players have scored hat-tricks for Rangers in the League Cup – Christian Nerlinger hit a treble in a 6-0 home win over Forfar in October 2003 and, most recently, Kyle Lafferty took the match ball home in Rangers 7-2 victory over Dunfermline in September 2010.

Between 1975 and 1984, Rangers reached 14 of the 19 finals, winning 12 of them. In the subsequent 22 years, the club has won the trophy on eight out of the nine times that they have reached the final.

The only time that they have exited the League Cup after only one match came in season 2013/14 after a shock extra-time defeat at the hands of Forfar in the first round.

This will be the first time since season 1990/91 that Rangers’ first competitive match of the season will be in the League Cup. On that occasion, Rangers beat East Stirlingshire 5-0 in the second round at Ibrox, on the way to defeating Celtic in the final thanks to goals from Mark Walters and Richard Gough.

Rangers have won the League Cup on six of the last seven times that they have met Motherwell at some stage of the competition, although the break in the sequence came after the last meeting, in 2012/13, when, after beating Motherwell 2-0 in the third round, Gers crashed out to Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the quarter-final.

LAST MEETING

GOALS from Fraser Aird, Arnold Peralta and Dean Shiels gave Rangers a well-earned victory in their final home game of the 2013/14 season and kept the club’s unbeaten league record intact.

On an emotional afternoon Aird’s stunning shot after 36 minutes flew past Stranraer’s keeper David Mitchell and it once again showed the undoubted potential the Murray Park youngster has.

Arnold Peralta then scored his first goal of the season before the hour mark with an excellent finish before Dean Shiels made it 3-0 from close range finish after Mitchell had made a good initial save to deny the Ulsterman.

With club legends Johnny Hubbard and Bobby Brown presenting Lee McCulloch with the League One trophy after the final whistle this was always going to be a day of celebration for fans.

But prior to kick off the stadium went silent for exactly one minute as Sandy Jardine was honoured by all present.

Players and officials surrounded the centre circle while staff at the club stood alongside Ally McCoist and the Gers bench with many shedding a tear for their former colleague.

It was easy to forget there were 90 minutes of football still to play but the players in blue, all wearing Jardine’s number two on their shorts, regained their focus quickly as referee Stephen Finnie got the action underway.
