Italy through 2-1, but if that is the next generation of Italian talent, well well. Not exactly Catenaggio (sp?), but it looked like all they were doing was defending their way through the game, destroying any attempt the English tried and hitting on the counter every now and then. The penalty was rather soft, IMHO, as the Italian made the most of the situation.

Rossiter has some physique, marshalled the midfield well enough and will be a good addition to our defensive midfield. Watched Brown and Bamford a bit more closely, but neither was that impressive - not least compared to what we have. Generally, the whole English attack-line ran about rather slack and looked lackadaisical for the best part of the last 30odd mins. A bit strange, given the occasion ...

JORDAN ROSSITER’S European dream is over after England crashed out of the Euro under-19 tournament in the semi-finals at the hands of Italy this afternoon.

The 19 year-old, who will now travel to Glasgow to join up with his new Gers teammates, captained the young Lions in Mannheim, Germany, but they were unable to battle through against a typically stubborn Azzuri outfit.

A double from Federico DiMarco either side of half-time saw the English trailing going into the closing stages, and despite an own-goal from Alberto Picchi with five minutes left to give them hope, Adrian Boothroyd’s youngsters couldn’t find another strike to take the match to extra-time.

Despite their exit, it has been a more than decent tournament for Rossiter and co. who recorded three wins from three in the group stage of the competition against France, the Netherlands and Croatia.

Their success in the group means they have qualified for next summer’s under-20 World Cup in South Korea.
