[FT] Rangers 2 (McKay 29; Waghorn 74) - 0 Annan Athletic

Ok, we didn't score as many goals we'd like and perhaps we took our foot of the gas a wee bit after half-time but that was a decent workout and another good result.

They will only get sharper, quicker and better.

It's early and still pre season,we will get sharper with every game, saying that it could have been more but for their goalie who had a good few saves!,

I am very excited about this season,we will be a real challenge for the title

Joey Barton made his debut as a substitute as Rangers sealed a second win from two League Cup group games against League Two Annan at Ibrox.

Barrie McKay's superb 25-yard strike after 30 minutes opened the scoring but the hosts missed a string of chances.

Martyn Waghorn, Lee Wallace and debutant Lee Hodson all went close before Barton curled a free-kick just wide moments after his entrance.

Waghorn eventually made it 2-0 after 74 minutes from Hodson's through ball.

Kenny Miller then headed over late on from fellow substitute Harry Forrester's cross.

After opening their campaign with victory at Motherwell on Saturday, Rangers' win puts them top of Group F on goal difference, with Stranraer snatching two late goals to beat East Stirling 3-1 after winning at Annan in their opener.

I think Forrester is going to be a star this season

Forrester is an absolute steal. I remember people were cracking him off in the start but I said from the beginning that he looks a good player and will be good when he gets fit. I just hope he stays fit as he takes a fair amount of bad tackles.

He could well be but don't discount Martyn Waghorn though.

Before he joined us a year ago his career was going nowhere. He scored a barrow load before his injury and had both & Forrester not got those injuries we'd have beaten Hibz easily in the SC final

He's started well this season already( 2 goals already) and if the goals keep coming then there's no doubt we'll be there or thereabouts at the top of the league. He'll be difficult to keep out the starting XI IMO

Agreed, I was just thinking outwith the obvious candidates and Forrester as an outside bet

If one wants to be "critical" of anything ... which is hard ... one might say that Windass plays a bit like Forrester in his first appearences, i.e. tries a little too hard. But honestly, give these lads 5 more games and we have a fine squad on our hands already, with Rossiter and Dodoo still to come.

Hodson looked solid and is sure a decent back-up for both Tav and Wallace. As ian intimated, I wouldn't be surprised if MW puts Tav in right midfield on occasion, with Hodson as right-back. They can double up on one another when defending, and Tav would have more freedom moving forward.

One wonders how Premiership managers will set their teams up this season. We might see some healthy scorelines early on, but I wouldn't be surprised if they start building brick walls from x-mas onwards, while trying to hit us on the counter.

The BBC covered exactly two games (livetext et al) from the League Cup tonight, and since we are the naughty ones and thus Ibrox was a no-go - zone, their folk ended up at Tannadice and New St. Mirren Park, i.e. at Championship level.

I think Forrester will do well too this season. I'm sure of that.

Last season we were quite fortunate with injuries/suspensions then Waghorn & Forrester got injured & the season didn't end as well as we'd have liked. Both were missed badly in a squad which proved not to be big enough.

In the top division we'll certainly need this bigger squad where we could be looking at around 50 domestic games inc cups.
