Martyn Waghorn: I've got no plans to leave Rangers

Recommended Posts

MARTYN WAGHORN has insisted he’s committed to Rangers — despite contract talks stalling.

Waghorn and fellow contract rebel James Tavernier were both on target in the 2-0 win at Motherwell yesterday.

Wags said: “I’m really happy here. I had a very good year last year, and I’ve still got two years left on my deal.

“There’s a lot of stuff going on but it’s up to my agent. I’m very happy, my family’s happy and I just want to get the season started and get going.”

Gers boss Mark Warburton said: “I don’t understand where this has come from, but it has clearly been leaked from somewhere.

“These conversations go on day in, day out between players, agents and clubs. I’m a bit bemused why it’s suddenly all about Tavernier and Waghorn.”

Warburton claimed his side had dominated the majority of the game at Fir Park — even though they could have been behind after a lacklustre first half display.

Warburton added: “I’ll take 12 minutes of rustiness, but I thought we dominated the game after then, and we should have scored more.

“Considering it was our first competitive game, we lost out on a few one v ones and gave the ball away cheaply early on, but after that it was a very pleasing day’s work.

“I thought our energy levels were really good, and you must remember most of our players have only had 45 minutes game time.

“But we dominated possession, created chances and looked sharp so I’m really pleased.

“I’ll look at the game again because we could have been one or two down at the start, and we should have stopped their chances. But once we got tighter in key areas there was only one team in it.”

Gers are hopeful of completing the signing of Leicester striker Joe Dodoo, and he could make his debut, along with Joey Barton, against Annan on Tuesday.

Warbs said: “If we can get the paperwork completed, Joe will be a good one for us. If we can, I’d like to involve him on Tuesday.

“Joey Barton will be involved on Tuesday in some capacity. Lee Hodson will start, as will Matt Gilks and Clint Hill.”

Meanwhile, Motherwell suffered a huge blow with the news last season’s top scorer Louis Moult will be out for two months.

Moult will have an op on a recurring groin problem and boss Mark McGhee said: “Louis will have minor surgery.

"He will miss the first three games of the season, but he should be back after the international break.

“It was a game of missed chances — we created enough chances to score. Rangers hade a lot of possession, but we made the best chances and didn’t take them.”

The improvement over the past year since MW arrived has been there for all to see. Fantastic.

But we need to realise is that we are using mostly English players whom in previous years(before the EPL became a cosmopolitan league) such as Tavernier, Waghorn etc and if they are successful with us they will be sold back to England at(hopefully) a profit to us

That is why it's good to see the Frank McParland appointment seems to be bearing fruit so early. Let us hope that continues.

What we must not do is pay silly amounts of money to Dundee Utd for players who were never good enough for us lke other clubs did.

I agree but there are good Scottish players out there and we have to know that market as well.

Trouble is though it is far more difficult to deal with Scottish clubs, see the Hibs player who is now rotting away at the piggery!,even MOH took ages to sign!,no Scottish team wants to deal with Rangers!,our scouting so far has been excellent.

Agree and we seem to have found a weak link in the system in getting out of contract u21's for 250.000. Ajax have been raiding teams for years buying their best youth players for the development fee. People were thinking their academy is great but it was their scouting system that was good.

I have no idea how much money we put into the scouting system. All I know is that it was zero before Warburton arrived and I have seen McParland comment that the likes of Liverpool put significant cash into it which enables them to have dozens of scouts scouring the lower leagues home and abroad while we have maybe less than a handful of people.

If we could even build up to putting a million a year into it just to monitor every last English lower leagues team over the course of a season all we need is a single gem to pay the money back tenfold.

They're out there waiting to be found and since not we or anybody else for that matter can possibly compete with the EPL teams in transfer fees it's the obvious path to take.
