Former coach says Rangers star Joey Barton will thrive in Glasgow

Recommended Posts

ONE of his routines is to get footballers to pretend they are an animal.

Plenty of people think Rangers new boy Joey Barton really IS one on the pitch.

But renowned sports coach Steve Black, who worked with Barton, says he’ll show that idea couldn’t be further from the truth.

And he reckons the 33-year-old will cope with starring for one half of the Old Firm.

He said: “When it comes to hotbeds of football, Glasgow’s one of the hottest in the world.

“I know it’ll stimulate Joe enormously. He will want to take Rangers to the highest level possible over the next few seasons.

“It will be no problem to Joe whatsoever, it will not cause him any problems at all.

“I think football fans in Scotland will be surprised by what they see from him, even in those Old Firm derbies, which I know are incredibly intense occasions.

“I think it’s fair to say that everyone can lose their temper in certain circumstances if they are really pushed, so it is not something that is unique to Joey.

“But what is now clear to Joey is that, in very simple terms, if you do lose your temper and get into trouble with the referee, then that is not helping the team and that’s what counts.

“But it’s also that he is not doing himself any favours if he loses his temper.

“There will be potential flashpoints but I tell Joey that if you care more about caring for others around you, than about not controlling your emotions, then you have got a real chance of keeping it under control.

“He’s learned how to handle himself in the right way because he puts people around him before himself.

“He’s a family man and a team man and he’s in a happy place and those factors have had positive effects.

“He’s an intelligent lad who has learned from his mistakes.

“He hasn’t won a huge amount of trophies, but he plays to win and that is inspirational to those around him.

“If he wasn’t stimulated by playing on such a grand stage, and if he didn’t think he could help Rangers to the top, then he wouldn’t have gone to Ibrox at this stage of his career.”
