British Teams in Europe 16/17

Recommended Posts

Hapoel Be'er Sheva were Israeli champions last year, so they will not be a walkover.

They have two "Bitons" in their team -- and a "Brown"! Apparently one of the Bitons is a cousin of Celtic's Biton... if that makes sense?

Incidentally, what does Hapoel mean? There are a few teams with that prefix; likewise Maccabi.

Edit: Seems to be political: Maccabi were a zionist organisation, but many felt it was predominantly bourgeoisie-focused, and so another organisation was set up, for the "workers", called Hapoel.

Am I right in thinking the Israelis knocked out Olympiakos in the last round

One of the shocks of the third qualifying round - aside from Dundalk of course - was Greek champions Olympiakos' defeat to Hapoel.

Despite a 0-0 draw in Athens, many expected the Greek giants to still progress after travelling to Beersheba but Hapoel had their own ideas.

Shir Tzedek’s 79th-minute winner sent the Turner Stadium absolutely wild with his left-footed strike as Olympiacos tumbled into the Europa League.

For those questions, google is your friend: Hapoel means "worker", Maccabi ...

The Maccabi World Union is an international Jewish sports organisation spanning 5 continents and more than 50 countries, with some 400,000 members.[2] Maccabi World Union organises the Maccabiah Games, a prominent international Jewish athletics event.

The movement is named after the Maccabees (Hebrew: מכבים or מקבים, Makabim) who were a Jewish national liberation movement that fought for and won independence from Antiochus IV Epiphanes.

We actually had the Maccabi World Games over here in Germany earlier this summer.
