Predictions for EURO 2016 Match Day 2

Recommended Posts

I really don't know how they manage to get pyro into the stadium. This is not East Fife or the like, it is the - especially in France right now - high security stuff. When I worked at the WC over here in Germany in 2006, people were "body-checked" up to three times ere they set a foot into the ground. Likewise, you would expect constant monitoring and massive police/steward presence too. Which is not to say that the hooligans and idiots are not to blame, far from it. But you would expect that they don't get in in the first place.

BTW, banning any team because of the behaviour of people who do not care for the game anyway is rubbish. For mor eoften than not, those responsible for the trouble won't mind whether a team gets banned while the team or association as such can't do much about it either.

It's a tricky situation. In the case of Croatia, it's an internal division. According to Slaven Bilic, there is a divide between the fans of Dynamo Zagreb and Hajduk Split (the largest clubs and cities; north and south); the former have all the resources, while the latter have little; some see it as an FA conspiracy. Banning them is not going to achieve much.

In the case of Russia, well, they are all singing from the same hymn sheet, so banning them would solve it, in the sense they wouldn't be there. However, it's clear some Russian fans are there just to cause bother, so would they turn up anyway?

It's disappointing. I agree, fans shouldn't be getting in with any type of pyrotechnics.

Generally speaking, the West need to re-establish better relations with Russia, rather than looking to marginalise them and increasing the stakes, ie. political dialogue/action.

Banning the Russian football team for their supporters behaviour wouldn't seem to be consistent with what has gone on in the past and would only fuel any negative consequences from further marginalisation.

You could ban or limit tickets going to Russia, you could police and steward the games more effectively, you could deport offenders almost immediately, etc. ........ but why now start banning countries from competing for something that has happened many times ?

It's a two-way street.

Maybe that's the point though, it continues to happen because the punishment is not harsh enough? I'm not singling out Russia, but perhaps it is time to ban teams that bring this baggage?

Anyway... Back to the football!

We have three games today: Belgium-Ireland, Iceland-Hungary and Portugal-Austria. They look to be quite even contests, so we should be in for a good group of games!

Dialogue is two-way.

If you are to ban teams for crowd trouble, then make it very plain prior to the tournament beginning and give countries an opportunity to take 'extra preventative measures' where possible.

Unfortunately, tendencies seem to indicate an increase in crowd trouble / violence. These are at least partly rooted in deeper problems that show no signs of getting better. With that in mind, major events in the future need to be planned with care.

edit.

Sorry,...and now........to the fitbaw.
