Predictions for EURO 2016 Match Day 1

Recommended Posts

Rightly or wrongly, England are seen as our closest international rivals so we can't expect everyone to want them to win.

As long as any 'ill-will' is kept to banter then I've no issue with it.

Pete, No 1, one side of my family is English, No 2, I'm British therefore I would support any of the home nations and No 3, I would rather have a positive attitude than than walk around with a negative one. Why the obsession with England doing badly?? You should focus your attention and energy on positives with Scotland, it makes Scotland and the scots look like we are small minded and bitter.

I would rather have a positive attitude, but whatever works for you??

Ra Sellik come from Glasgow Coop. Should we support them when they play in Europe ?

England were seen as our closest rivals when I was a boy. I still hope they get humped in every match they play. I have family who are English too. I love them to bits but that doesn't stop me wanting to see their team lose.

The rivalry with England is embedded in our history and it goes further back than football.

In recent decades the footballing panorama has changed with England moving on with the times and more money whilst Scotland have went backwards. For youngsters today, they may not feel the footballing rivalry with our neighbours so keenly as the older generations, who watched the Home Internationals at the end of every season.

Post referendum, everything that has national relevance and especially when connected with England has become a polarised 'war-zone' for making your point and any reason tends to go out of the window or is ignored.

Can you tell me a reason to be Pro-English. Personally i hope they lose every game they play.

Supporting Engerland does not make me a better proddie.

Where did anyone mention religion when talking about England ?

The only person that brought someone's religion into it was you pete.

The dislike of England, or indeed the support of England, is, or should, be far more to do with them being our closest international rivals as Frankie says.

Funnily for me - I used to be in the A.B.E. party - but since the SFA and the clubs of Scotland have kicked us from pillar to post in an effort to kill us, I have completely reversed my stance and hope England do well in each tournament they enter.

Whatever makes you happy. I will stick to my positivity. I'm hardly likely to wish the mhanks good luck in Europe am I lol?? Like I said, I wish every home nation well and like to see them doing well, I'm British. Boabie, re your point having English family, you know as well as I that a lot of people seriously dislike the English and it's not just football, it seems to have become a lot worse post referendum.

I have a lot of banter too with them, I also have many English mates, however why on earth would I wish them to get humped at every opportunity? They, along with Wales and NI are the home nations representing the UK, I wish them all the very best.

Each to their own, if that's what people are interested in fair enough, nothing personal directed at anyone, I don't know anyone on here, I would rather focus on constructive aspects, that's all.

On a positive note, I reckon the match on Thursday will be a cracker?

I suppose to history buffs the Austria-Hungary game has a air of intrigue about it historically, but does anyone know if this carries to the modern day situation?

Habsburgian joke:

Did you see the Austria-Hungary game last night?

No, who were they playing?

(Or, variations on that theme. Don't laugh too hard!)

Using your example of England being part of the UK so wanting them to win I would say it's perfectly reasonable that we should support a neighbour who is even closer, ie the manks. :rfcbouncy:

As for dislike of the English - imo that was far more serious in days of yore. At the time when alcohol was not banned there were several matches where there was a risk of death. I can recall practically the whole England support being escorted by the police from the Toryglen end of Hampden. They were in serious danger at that game. Things reached a peak during the Thatcher years when no line was drawn between her, Little England and England. Buut it would probably be fair to say we were only 90 minute homophobes. Point taken, nowadays it lasts much longer than the length of a match.

Thursday is one of the few games I'll be interested in seeing so I'm hoping for a goodun too.
