Rangers fans from Greenock cleared of offensive chant charges

Recommended Posts

TWO Rangers fans from Greenock have been cleared of singing songs in support of a terrorist organisation at a festive football fixture.

John Montgomery and Brian Taylor denied singing a song in support of the 'Young Citizens Volunteers' at a Championship away match between their side and Dumbarton in January.

During their trial at Dumbarton Sheriff Court, pictured, it emerged the Young Citizens Volunteers - thought to be the 'youth wing' of the Ulster Volunteer Force - is not on a list of terrorist organisations compiled by the government.

Despite it being perfectly legal to join the YCV two police officers from a specialist unit said they believed it was illegal to sing about them.

Montgomery, of South Street, and Taylor, of Bearhope Street, were cleared after Sheriff Maxwell Hendry ruled they had no case to answer - and he criticised the law they were charged under.

Montgomery and Taylor also blasted the Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications Act after they were cleared, saying it 'criminalises' fans across Scotland.

Aswell as being badly flawed and discriminatory against football supporters it is now an embarrassing disgrace of legislation that is extremely difficult to police and publicly ridiculed by the judiciary.

Not surprising that Spiers was a proponent of it when he acted as a consultent/witness in front of Parliment.

Seems to me in this case it's not so much a poor law but rather police officers who don't know the law.

Don't forget it's the Procurator Fiscal who decides to take a case to court or not.

Good point. You would like to believe that the PF did his/her homework, but obviously not in this case.

What a climbdown if true.

Will our esteemed politicians from the shortbread senate admit they got it wrong

It should not be forgotten that this legislation was brought in by the then lhabour administration to catch Rangers supporters but ended up snaring yahoos who were by far the worst offenders
