Motherwell stars asked to take wage cut

Recommended Posts

MOTHERWELL stars have been asked to take a wage cut despite their top six finish this season.

Out-of-contract aces Stephen McManus, Keith Lasley, Stevie Hammell, James McFadden and Craig Samson have all been offered new deals — but on reduced terms to this season.

Striker Scott McDonald has also been offered a deal as he enters the option year of his contract — and manager Mark McGhee admitted at the weekend the little Aussie “holds the aces” regarding his own future.

McGhee intends to trim his squad with loan players Morgaro Gomis and Connor Ripley returning to their parent clubs and players from the side which recently won the Youth Cup getting the chance to play a more prominent part.

Motherwell have posted total losses of almost £1million over the past three seasons and during Les Hutchison’s 14 months as majority shareholder he advanced the club loans totalling around that amount.

But he sold his 76 per cent shareholding to the Well Society for £1 with a view towards fan ownership.

However that has meant budget cuts and McGhee spelled that out to his squad in meetings last week.
