Rangers FC: Mike Ashley faces double whammy as he prepares to abandon court case over Dave King's ‘fit and proper’ status

THE Sports Direct tycoon could now be forced to cough up hefty legal fees to Rangers chief King AND the SFA with Ashley set to back away from judicial review at last minute.

MIKE ASHLEY is facing a humiliating double whammy at Edinburgh’s Court of Session today.

Record Sport understands lawyers acting for the Sports Direct billionaire are set to abandon attempts to force a judicial review of the SFA’s decision to pass Dave King as ‘fit and proper’ for the role of Rangers chairman.

And Ashley could also be forced to fork out a small fortune to cover six months' worth of legal costs run up by legal teams representing both the Hampden top brass and King himself since the petition was launched in November last year.

The judicial review was scheduled to begin this morning and last over two days. But yesterday, at the eleventh hour, Ashley’s lawyers suddenly backed down.

The case is still expected to be called this morning in order for it to be officially cancelled by a judge.

The SFA have had to divert hundreds of thousands of pounds away from the game to pay for their own legal advice and are expected to demand that Ashley picks up the tab in full.

King, in his position as an ‘interested party’ will also seek financial recourse from his long time nemesis.

Ashley could end up paying a six figure sum for King and the SFA legal costs as well as his own.

Justice Smith had Ashleys number from day one back in the London courtroom last December.

A vexatious, fat and rich bully who uses financial muscle within the legal system without always thinking things through properly and when someone like Justice Smith is prepared to do his homework and call it how it is then Mr MASH and his lawyers are seen to be wearing their 'birthday suits'.

Ashley and his horrible empire have been on the ground taking a good metaphorical kicking for a good few months now.

To the extent that you'd harbour realistic hopes for there to be lasting damage.
