John Greig was rewarded for handing out Ladbrokes Championship winners’ medals to the Rangers players with a less-than-subtle reminder from James Tavernier that one of the legend’s Ibrox records had fallen.

Right back Tavernier’s equaliser in the 1-1 draw with bottom-club Alloa Athletic that preceded the long-awaited Ibrox title party was his 15th this term — a record for a Rangers defender in one season.

Greig, in 1967-68, and the late Sandy Jardine seven years later, netted 14 times for Rangers.

‘It was special to have John Greig handing out the medals at the end because of his standing and status within the club, along with the way he interacts with the players,’ said manager Mark Warburton. ‘Tav broke his record — and it took him about a second to remind John of that fact!

‘But John’s reaction was tremendous. He imparts his knowledge on the players all the time. It was fantastic to see him on the pitch.

‘Many clubs have legendary figures around the place but John has been there and done it at the highest level.

‘He also knows what this club is all about and he is excellent at passing on things when new players arrive at Rangers.’

Greig stayed away from his beloved club after severing ties in October 2011 as Craig Whyte’s ruinous grip on power at Rangers was in full effect, only endorsing the Ibrox hierarchy again when Dave King wrested control

Now honorary life president of Rangers, Greig was roared on to the pitch by the 50,000-plus crowd as the presentation party got into full swing and he handed out medals to each member of the playing squad and coaching staff.

‘It was fitting that John gave us the medals,’ said defender Danny Wilson.

‘He is always about the place giving us pelters. I’m delighted he was here to present the medals.

‘He has always been a great help and an inspiring figure for the young boys to look up to.

‘It was nice to have someone with that experience and success to put an arm round you, tell you what you did or didn’t need to do.’

Greig watched Rangers fail to match the intensity of recent weeks when they clinched the title with victory over Dumbarton, lifted the Petrofac Cup then knocked Celtic out of the Scottish Cup.

on Saturday, Andy Halliday missed a penalty in between Michael Duffy’s opener and the header from Tavernier on the stroke of half-time.

When asked if the afternoon was always going to be flat in the wake of recent triumphs, Warburton said: ‘We wanted to avoid that after highlighting it might be a possibility.

‘But after winning the league, then the Petrofac, then what happened last Sunday, maybe it’s a natural reaction. We need to pick it up pretty quick — but we will do.

‘I was disappointed with the performance but the celebrations were well deserved. It was good for the players to get their rewards and enjoy them.’

Wilson, who won the second-tier crown with Hearts last term, added: ‘It was nowhere near what we’ve been about all season.

‘If I’m being honest, it put a wee dampener on the day and it just shows you what a difference six days can make.

‘Last Sunday was such a high but it’s been a defeat (at Hibs) and a draw since then.

‘That happens over the course of the season and, at the end of the day, we got the job done in terms of the league.

‘I was confident we’d win the Championship because the Premiership is where we want to play our football.’

I know this is paper bullshit but just in case it is not, their tally was in the top division and to be honest you couldn't lace their boots at this moment. You have time to become a Rangers great though.
